What you would seeLo que verías

Seen from directly above against a smooth gray background, a round, dark bronze mirror fills almost the entire frame, its shadow pooling to the lower left. Its outline is not a perfect circle but a ring of shallow, even lobes, like a stylized flower. This is the decorated back, not the reflecting face. At the center rises a polished, domed knob, bright where it catches the light, set inside an eight-petaled floral medallion in low relief. Around it, four creatures move in a circle within a raised border: at the top and bottom, two phoenixes with crested heads, sweeping ribbon-like tails, layered wings, and one upturned claw; at the left and right, two smaller four-legged auspicious beasts rearing and twisting, with curling manes, tails, and cloud-like scrolls trailing beside them. Smaller floral scrolls punctuate the wider outer rim. The surface is mostly charcoal-black and gunmetal gray, broken by rusty brown, coppery, and faint green corrosion, especially near the center and edges. Highlights slide over the raised plumage, legs, and border, giving the cast metal a hard, slightly pitted texture. The composition feels balanced and rotating, calm at the center and animated at the edges.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin at the glossy central knob and move outward, following the circular motion of the animals. Then compare the two phoenixes: they echo one another rather than match exactly. Finally, look at the mottled patina, which changes a courtly luxury object into a record of age.

ContextContexto

This bronze mirror, made by an unknown maker in China in the 700s during the Tang dynasty (618-907), is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The source identifies its subject as a pair of phoenixes with auspicious animals. In Tang China, bronze mirrors were both practical objects and carriers of symbols of good fortune, harmony, and protection. Their decorated backs were cast in relief, while the opposite face was polished to reflect. The lobed outline echoes floral forms that were fashionable in Tang metalwork. No specific place of manufacture, owner, or findspot is recorded in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso

A Chinese bronze mirror is not reflective on its decorated side: the smooth, highly polished front did the work, while a cord passed through the central knob allowed the mirror to be held or hung.

This reverse speaks to me of matter and time. I see a dark bronze, almost charcoal black and lead gray, with reddish brown spots and faint coppery green corrosion. At the center, the polished hemispherical knob shines inside an eight-petaled flower. I linger on the relief: feathers marked with lines, long wavy tails, curly manes. The metal feels hard and slightly porous under the light. The lobed rim, even like a flower, is intact and casts a dense shadow. It is serenity at the center and movement around it.

I look at it like a portable sky. At the center there is a knob that looks like a small sun, calm, inside an eight-pointed flower that could be a compass rose. Around it four creatures orbit: at top and bottom the two crested phoenixes with ribbon tails, at the sides the two twisted quadrupeds among cloud-like swirls. They all circle the center in perfect rotation. The lobed rim is like the corona of an eclipse. It is a cosmos of good fortune spinning in bronze.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a chocolate cookie shaped like a flower with animals playing ring-around-the-rosy. In the middle there is a shiny knob like a marble where you can place your finger. At top and bottom there are two fancy birds with super long tails like dancing ribbons and pointy crests. At the sides there are two furry little animals with curly tails jumping among tiny clouds. Everything spins around the center like a merry-go-round. I like counting the lobes on the edge and spotting the brown spots that look like sprinkles. It is a mirror for imagining stories.
