What you would seeLo que verías
An open ceramic bowl on a short pedestal foot, photographed in three-quarter view against a smooth grey background that darkens toward the top. The vessel sits centred and low in the frame, casting a soft shadow to both sides. Its mouth is wide and slightly oval in perspective, with a thin, gently rounded rim in a reddish tan. The exterior is mostly plain: warm beige and light brown earthenware mottled with fine black speckling, grey-green darkening near the base, and an uneven, matte surface with small scuffs and worn patches. The foot is a short, flaring ring, darker and rougher than the body. Inside, the surface is much busier. Over a tan ground are dense geometric patterns in dark brown and black—zigzags, stepped lines, parallel hatching and interlocking angular motifs—interrupted by vertical bands of rust red and, on the left, two small pale circles beside red marks. The painted interior looks timeworn, with areas faded, darkened or partly lost, so individual figures are difficult to distinguish from this angle. The lighting is soft and diffuse, with no harsh reflections, emphasising the clay's dry texture and the quiet, shallow curve of the bowl.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the silhouette: a wide, open bowl balanced on a very short foot. Then move inside, where the geometric rhythm is broken by patches of red and darker figures that are hard to make out. That contrast between a plain, speckled exterior and a densely painted interior changes the reading: the decoration was meant to be discovered by whoever looked or ate from within.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this pedestal bowl was made by an unknown maker around 750–1250, in the Piartal style of the highland Nariño region of southwestern Colombia. In that region, the dead were buried in shaft tombs—some, the most elaborate, up to sixty feet deep—furnished with offerings such as these bowls. The source notes that Colombian ceramics are not much studied and that little can be said with certainty about their imagery, beyond a keen interest in geometric abstraction. It describes figures with thatch-roofed huts, humans attacked by birds, and spiders; the specific meaning of those scenes is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
According to the source, the most elaborate shaft tombs in the Nariño region could reach sixty feet deep—about 18 metres, roughly the height of a six-storey building—and bowls like this one were placed inside as offerings.

Look at the contrast between outside and inside. On the outside this bowl is almost all beige and light brown, mottled, matte, with worn clay and scuffs from time. The ring foot is darker and rougher. But inside color bursts out: on an ochre background there are zigzags, stepped lines and hatched patterns in dark brown and black, interrupted by vertical stripes of rust red. It looks worn and faded, and that tells me a lot about its age and its use as an offering.

This bowl makes me think about how we look from above. Photographed in three-quarters view, its wide mouth looks slightly oval and reveals the interior like a map or a sky. The dark geometric patterns on ochre, with zigzags and interlaced angles, remind me of abstract constellations. We know it comes from the high plateau of Nariño and that Piartal pottery favors geometric abstraction, although little is known for certain about what those spiders and figures mean.

On the outside it looks like a simple cookie-colored bowl with little black dots, but inside it's a surprise! It's full of little drawings of zigzag lines and black and brown dashes on a honey-like background, with red stripes standing up like ribbons. On the left there are two light little circles. It's a bit faded because it's very, very old and it was in a deep tomb as a gift. I like to imagine it's a secret bowl for keeping stories.
