What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of the image, against a smooth, dark gray background with no other objects, stands a ceramic bowl with a lid, photographed frontally and slightly from above. The lower part is a wide, rounded vessel on a short flared foot, with weathered beige and tan surfaces, faint reddish traces, and fine horizontal marks. A thick, glossy, reddish-brown rim separates the bowl from the lid. The lid is a tall, bell- or cone-shaped dome, matte and sandy in color, decorated with two rows of small raised bumps that encircle it like dotted belts. Crowning the dome is an iguana modeled in relief and volume, painted in dark red and brown with polished, almost lustrous skin. The animal grips the cone with curved claws, lifts its head toward the upper left, and opens its mouth, showing small teeth. Beneath its chin hangs an expanded dewlap with circular perforations. It has bulging eyes, small crests on its head and back, a round mark on its shoulder, and a tense, alert posture. Soft light from the left creates gentle shadows under the bowl and highlights the contrast between the rough lid and the smooth iguana. The scale appears modest, like a container that could be lifted with both hands.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the iguana's raised head, then follow its claws down to the point where the animal becomes the lid's handle. Notice the contrast between its smooth, polished red body and the rough, pale surface of the lid. That tension between a living creature and a container changes the piece from a simple bowl into a guarded vessel.
ContextContexto
This ceramic bowl with a lid, attributed to the Southern Nicoya region of Costa Rica and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, is dated to c. 600–1100, although thermoluminescence testing gave a later range of 995–1395, so its exact age is not known. Its maker is unknown and left no written records. According to the source, at the time of the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, Costa Rican mythology linked iguanas to the sky and to rulers. It is probable, but not certain, that earlier makers shared similar beliefs. Fine ceramics like this one were buried in the graves of high-status dead, some of them leaders.

Curious detailDato curioso
Surprising visual observation: the iguana is not a decoration placed on top of the lid; its four legs grip the cone and its body functions as the handle you would lift to open the bowl.

I pause on the contrast of surfaces in this lidded bowl. The lower body looks worn, in beige and toasted tones, with reddish traces and a thick glossy reddish-brown rim. The conical lid, instead, is matte sand-colored and has two belts of small raised bumps. On top, the modeled iguana is smooth and almost lustrous, in dark red and brown. I wonder how the perforated dewlap and curved claws survived, still showing such lively tension.

When I look at this lid crowned by an iguana, I recall what the record says: at the time of the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, in Costa Rica iguanas were linked to the sky and to rulers. We do not know for sure if those who made this bowl, between 600 and 1100 by one attribution and between 995 and 1395 by thermoluminescence, shared that view. But picturing it in a high-status tomb makes me think of offerings that linked earth and sky.

It looks like the iguana is guarding a cake! The bowl below is like a beige little belly and the lid is a tall sandy hat with two necklaces of tiny dots. The red iguana is on top holding on tight, mouth open and dewlap with little holes, looking to the left as if roaring. I like its crests, bulging eyes and curved claws. It must be the guardian of the bowl and will not let anyone open it without permission.
