What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of a vertical sheet of ivory-colored paper, its platemark still visible, stands a single monumental vase seen from the front and filling almost the entire height. The vessel rests on a short stem and a square foot set on a cracked, horizontally elongated stone slab, drawn with long vertical strokes below and fine horizontal hatching in the background. The lower body is dark and fluted, divided from the belly by a thick twisted rope molding. Above it, the surface becomes a crowded relief: at the center, two small nude putti sit facing each other, one turned three-quarters away and the other frontal, surrounded by clouds, drapery, and large feathered wings. On either side, a woman's head in profile emerges beneath a tall, twisted, horn-like handle; long feathers or wings overlap their hair and shoulders. The shoulder of the vase is mottled and speckled, swelling toward a short neck with a wavy, mushroom-like rim, darkened by dense cross-hatching. The black ink ranges from deep shadow to delicate dotted texture. At lower left is the inscription “J. Saly J. et Sculp.” and at lower right the number “19.”

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the vase's familiar silhouette, then move in until the ornament stops being ornament and becomes figures. Notice how the side faces, wings, and infants merge with the body of the vessel. The twisted handles, rising like horns or braided ropes, change the piece from a classical urn into an imaginary creature.

ContextContexto

The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies this work as Plate 19 from the Suite of Vases, etched in 1746 by Jacques François Saly (French, 1717–1776). Saly, trained as a sculptor, studied at the French Academy in Rome from 1740 to 1746, when he published a set of thirty etchings of vases. According to the museum, he began with basic antique vase forms but departed from classical ornament to embellish them with a rich variety of fantastic creatures. Designing ornamental urns was especially popular in the mid-18th century, when the artist's imagination set the main limit.

Curious detailDato curioso

This seemingly solid, sculptural urn probably never existed as an object: it is an etched invention on paper, one of thirty vase designs Saly published in 1746.

I focus on the ink and the paper. I see the ivory background with the plate mark and how Saly plays with deep blacks, stippling and cross-hatching. Below the body is dark and fluted, separated by a molding that looks like twisted rope. Above, the relief gets crowded, the speckled shoulder and the wavy mouth like a mushroom. It is an exercise in etching control, from 1746, where every shadow is built by hand.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This vase feels like a small cosmos to me. At the bottom the base is solid like ground, a cracked slab with fine horizontal hatching behind it. At the center two putti occupy the equator of the piece among clouds and drapery, like planets. On the sides the tall twisted handles rise like horns or comets, and the feathered wings open like constellations. Saly starts from the antique but lets imagination orbit freely, without limit.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a magic vase that is transforming! At the bottom it is stripy and serious, with a thick little rope in the middle. But up top everything happens, there are two babies with no clothes sitting face to face, with huge little wings and clouds. On the sides ladies heads peek out with wings in their hair and super long handles like twisted horns. The top is all speckles and the mouth is like a wavy mushroom. I want to count how many wings there are!
