What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical etching in black ink on slightly rough, grayish paper with irregular margins and a thin linear frame. At the center, occupying almost the entire height, stands a large ornamental vase seen from the front, resting on a low rocky base drawn with vertical strokes. The background is a faint pattern of dots and horizontal lines that creates a neutral space and makes the silhouette stand out. The lower part of the vase is a wide cup with grooves radiating from its center, supported by a short, curved, swelling foot with dark patches that suggest polished metal or stone. Above it, a rectangular band contains the main relief: two reclining nude bodies, seen from behind or in profile, flank a front-facing mask with large eyes and an open mouth, amid foliage and undulating forms. Above that, the neck narrows and then widens toward a broad mouth with a scalloped rim. Its surface is covered with a dense, almost mossy or scaly texture made from thousands of tiny dots and short strokes. On both sides below the rim, two heads in profile look in opposite directions, their long hair mingled with leaves and ribbons that merge into the vase. At lower left is a signature in cursive, and at lower right the number “20.” No visible light source is shown; the effect comes from the contrast between the white of the paper, the grays of the hatching, and deep black shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the overall silhouette of the vase, then move up to the two faces in profile beneath the rim. Next, look closely at the central band: the reclining bodies and the front-facing mask change a decorative object into a small populated scene. Finally, notice how the dense dotted texture makes the surface seem alive rather than carved from stone.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is Plate 20 from a suite of ornamental vases by French artist Jacques François Saly (1717–1776), published in 1746 as an etching. Saly was trained as a sculptor and studied at the French Academy in Rome from 1740 to 1746, when he issued a set of 30 etchings. The source explains that designing ornamental vases was especially popular in the mid-18th century and that Saly began with basic antique vase forms, then departed from classical ornament by adding a rich variety of fantastic creatures. It is not known from these data whether this exact vase was ever made as a physical object.

Curious detailDato curioso

This design belongs to a set of 30 etchings that Saly published in 1746, so Plate 20 was conceived as part of a larger repertoire of imaginary variations, not as an isolated drawing.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the grayish, slightly rough paper and the black etching ink. I see how Saly built the form with dots and lines: the fluted bowl at the bottom, the short bulging foot with dark patches, and at the center, the band with two reclining nude bodies flanking a mask with large eyes and an open mouth. Above, the scalloped rim looks mossy thanks to thousands of tiny dots. It is a 1746 design, meant to be viewed straight on, not necessarily ever made as an object.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

This vase feels like a constellation caught on paper. The dotted background is like a faint, neutral sky that makes the dark silhouette stand out, just like a moonless night. The rocky base anchors the piece like a planet, and the two profile heads at the mouth look in opposite directions, like opposing satellites. The central mask with its open mouth could be an eclipse. Everything is black ink, white and gray, with no drawn light source, only contrast.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This vase kind of creeps me out but I really like it. At the bottom it has little sun rays, and in the middle there are two people with no clothes lying next to a funny face with huge eyes and an open mouth, hidden among little plants. Up top the rim looks like a wavy cookie and feels all scratchy like scales. On the sides two heads pop out with long hair that blends into leaves. On one side it says 20 with a little signature in cursive.

  1. #1

Look at the lower part of the print: what number appears written on the right, next to the cursive signature?

    HintPista

Check the lower right corner, near the thin linear frame.

  2. #2

On the central band of the vase, what element looks straight at the viewer between the two reclining bodies?

    HintPista

It is surrounded by foliage and wavy shapes, right at the center of the decoration.

  3. #3

How many profile heads peek out from the sides of the wide scalloped mouth of the vase?

    HintPista

They look in opposite directions and their hair blends into leaves and ribbons.
