What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical black-ink etching on warm off-white paper shows a single monumental urn centered against a pale ground covered in fine horizontal dots. The vessel fills most of the plate. Its wide mouth flares outward with a thick, unevenly scalloped rim, shaded with short, energetic strokes. Below it, a narrower neck has a rough, woven texture, followed by a smooth cylindrical band marked by faint horizontal lines. The swollen lower body is the most striking part: dense cross-hatching turns it into a shaggy face seen from the front, with heavy lowered eyelids, a broad nose, long whisker-like mustache, and a dark pointed beard at the center. On each side, a nude, muscular, hunched figure clings to the vase, seen mostly from the back and side; their bodies serve as handles and dissolve downward into twisted ropes, fur, tassels, and leafy forms that wrap around the body. The urn stands on a short knopped stem and an irregular rocky foot, set on a flat, cracked stone slab drawn with vertical lines. At lower left is handwritten-style lettering, “J. Saly. J. et. Sculp.”, and at lower right, “29.” The paper’s deckled edges and the plate mark are visible.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look first at the urn as a symmetrical object, then let its lower half resolve into a face. Next, follow the side figures downward: their bodies become handles and merge with ropes, fur, and leaves. That transformation changes a decorative design into a living, slightly unsettling creature.
ContextContexto
This is plate 29 of a suite of ornamental vase designs by Jacques François Saly (1717–1776), a French artist trained as a sculptor. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, Saly studied at the French Academy in Rome from 1740 to 1746, when he published a set of 30 etchings. Designing vases and urns was especially popular in the mid-18th century, when imagination set few limits. Saly began with basic antique forms but departed from classical ornament, using a rich variety of fantastic creatures as embellishment. It is not known whether this particular vase was ever made in a physical material.

Curious detailDato curioso
This seemingly unique vessel belongs to a larger imaginative catalogue: Saly published the design as part of a set of 30 vase etchings in 1746.

I pause to look at the warm bone-colored paper and how the black ink sits on it. You can still see the plate mark and the irregular deckled margins that tell us this is an original print. Notice the contrast between areas: the scalloped mouth with short energetic strokes, the rough woven-like neck, and the lower belly where dense crosshatching forms that bearded face with half-closed lids and a filamentous moustache. I worry about the fragility of those fine dotted background lines and the vertical hatching of the cracked slab below.

I see this monumental urn as if it were an invented constellation. At the center the vertical vessel fills almost the whole sheet, like a planet with rings: the wide scalloped mouth at the top, the narrow neck in the middle, and the bulging base below. The hairy face with a pointed beard stares straight ahead, and on each side two hunched muscular figures act as handles, dissolving into twisted ropes and leaves. It is a universe engraved with dots and lines, an eighteenth-century design we do not know was ever made in three dimensions.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It looks like a vase with a hidden face! If you look, the bottom part is a hairy man with sleepy eyes, a big nose and a pointy beard in the middle. His moustache looks made of little threads. On the sides two people with no clothes hug him really tight and become his ears or handles, and from their feet come ropes with tassels and little leaves. At the top the vase mouth is like a wavy thick rim. It stands on a little rocky foot over a cracked platform. Can you see it?

It is not pure white, it is a light tone like bone or cream surrounding the whole vase.
