What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical etching in black and brownish ink on cream-colored paper, enclosed by a thin rectangular border. At the center rises a monumental, impossible vase: its upper part, occupying almost the entire width at the top, has the form of a striated shell or fan that opens upward and is cropped by the edge of the print. Deep grooves, made with curved, dense, cross-hatched lines, make it look like a whirlpool, twisted cloth, or eroded rock. Holding up that mass are two nude tritons with powerfully muscled human torsos and scaly sea-creature tails that intertwine in a central knot. The figure on the left, seen from behind with his body twisted in profile, embraces the vase with an outstretched arm; the one on the right turns his torso toward the viewer, with a strained expression and wild hair like seaweed. Their tails end in forked fins that spread across a rectangular base textured with scales or waves. Below is a broad pedestal marked with vertical lines and small cracks at its edges. The pale background has fine horizontal hatching that contrasts with the intense shadows on the bodies. At lower left is an engraved signature and, at lower right, the number 30.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the huge flaring top and notice that it is cropped by the edge of the print, as if it were too large to contain. Then follow the twisted muscles downward to the knotted tails. That tangle is what changes the reading: the vase is not simply decorated with creatures, it seems to be carried, wrestled, or even generated by them.

ContextContexto

According to the source data, this is Plate 30 of *Suite of Vases*, an etching made in 1746 by French artist Jacques François Saly (1717–1776), a sculptor by training. Saly studied at the French Academy in Rome from 1740 to 1746, when he published a set of thirty etchings of ornamental vases. Designing such vases was especially popular in the mid-18th century. Saly began with basic antique vase forms but departed from classical ornament by using a rich variety of fantastic creatures as embellishment. It is not known whether this design was meant to be built; it was probably, above all, an imaginative work on paper.

Curious detailDato curioso

This is plate number 30 — visible at lower right — from a published suite of thirty vase designs, so this fantastic image closes the series.

  1. Is this vase an object to be used, a sculpture to be contemplated, or a creature in its own right?¿Este jarrón es un objeto para usarse, una escultura para contemplarse o una criatura en sí mismo?
  2. What feeling is produced by the contrast between the tritons' physical effort and the silent stillness of an ornamental design?¿Qué sensación produce el contraste entre el esfuerzo físico de los tritones y la quietud silenciosa de un diseño ornamental?
  3. If this vase could be built, what material could convey both the weight of the upper part and the movement of the tails?

If you look closely you will see this is not a vase for use, it is black and sepia ink on cream paper. I am interested in how the etching creates volume with lines alone: dense curved striations for the upper shell and a fine horizontal hatching in the background that makes the deep shadows on the muscles stand out. The thin rectangular frame contains everything and below you can see the signature on the left and the number 30 on the right, traces of the printing process.

What captivates me most is that upper part cut off by the edge, like a spiral galaxy or a swirling nebula made of crossed lines. It looks like a huge shell spinning and never finishing its shape. Below, the two muscular tritons hold it up as if they were constellations under tension, with scaly tails knotted at the center. It makes me think about how Saly in 1746 imagined an impossible monument, closer to the vertigo of the universe than to a classic decorative object.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This vase is so weird and I love it! On top it looks like a giant fan or a shell with stripes opening up and going off the page. It is carried by two super strong merman with no shirts and fish tails that get all tangled in the middle. One has his back to us hugging it and the other looks at you like wow this is heavy! Their tails with little fins rest on a small board with scales. You can tell it is a very old drawing, from the year 1746, and it is number 30.
