What you would seeLo que verías

At the center of the print, isolated against a background of fine horizontal hatching, stands a large ornamental vase resting on a platform shaded with vertical strokes. The etching, in black ink on cream paper, displays a dense play of textures: the lower belly of the vessel is hatched with energetic curved strokes suggesting burnished metal, while the neck and domed lid show fluting with teardrop lobes and beaded edges. Around the midsection, a thick, granular garland frames three human faces emerging frontally and in profile, with serene and slightly melancholic expressions and loose hair. On the domed cover, two female sphinxes crouch facing each other, with bare torsos, defined breasts, hair tied with a ribbon, and feline hindquarters with curled tails; they lean inward and join their forepaws over the narrow mouth of the vase. Deep shadows under the figures and at the base of the flared pedestal give weight and three-dimensionality. Light is suggested by bright reserves on the metal and on the sphinxes' backs. In the lower left corner the signature J. Saly F. et Sculp. is visible, and on the right the number 5.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the vase from bottom to top, from its solid pedestal to the intimate encounter of the two sphinxes leaning toward each other. Pause at the three garlanded faces; notice how the central one gazes directly out and gives the decoration an almost human presence. Finally observe the hatched background and the contrast between delicate linework and exuberant ornament.

ContextContexto

According to data from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is Plate 5 from a set of 30 etchings published in 1746 by Jacques François Saly (1717–1776), a French sculptor trained at the French Academy in Rome from 1740 to 1746. The source notes that designing ornamental vases and urns was especially popular in the mid-18th century, a genre where the only limit was the artist's imagination. Saly started from basic antique vase forms but departed from classical ornament to add a rich variety of fantastic creatures, typical of Rococo taste and the period's fascination with antiquity. The specific patron or intended use of this print is not recorded; it probably served as a model book for craftsmen and collectors.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although Saly was trained as a sculptor, this series of 30 etched vases became one of his most widely circulated works and was used as a pattern book of ornamental fantasy for other 18th-century artists and artisans.

I linger on how Saly builds material with pure line. The etching in black ink on cream paper creates distinct textures with incredible control. Below, energetic curved hatching suggests burnished metal, above the gadroons shaped like drops and the beaded edges add rhythm. The grainy garland around the equator holds three serene faces. I love the dense shadow under the two sphinxes on the lid and at the base of the pedestal, because that is where the vase finds its real weight.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this vase as a small symmetrical universe. Isolated against a background of horizontal lines, it seems to float like a planet above its shaded ledge. Its equator is marked by a garland with three faces looking in different directions, like moons watching. At the top, at the pole, two sphinxes lean in and join their front paws over the narrow mouth, forming a constellation. The domed lid and the flared pedestal give it a perfect vertical axis, as if it were slowly spinning.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This vase looks super fancy but also funny. At the bottom it has little lines like someone combed it and on top it has tiny beads along the rim. On its belly there are three little faces with loose hair peeking out among leaves and they look a bit sad. What I like most is that on the little lid there are two sphinxes that look like kitty girls with human bodies, with curly tails, crouching and touching hands as if they were playing. It looks heavy because of the shadow underneath.
