What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical print in black ink on aged, off-white paper shows a single ornate vase centered against a densely hatched background. Fine horizontal lines fill almost the entire field, making the lighter contours of the vase stand out and giving the scene a flat, theatrical backdrop. At the bottom, a band of vertical lines suggests a ledge or tabletop; a thin diagonal crack crosses its right side. The vase rests on a small, flaring, fluted foot. Above it, a rounded lower bowl with vertical ribs is separated by a braided band from the wider upper body. That body is crowded with decoration: curling foliage, scrolls, shells, and a grotesque central face seen from the front, with bulging features, a long flowing moustache, and an open mouth as if shouting or singing. Two sinuous, animal-like creatures climb the sides, their bodies arched, tails curling outward, and front limbs gripping the lobed rim at the top. Their heads are small and partly lost among leaves and waves of ornament. The etching combines precise parallel hatching with looser, sketchy strokes, creating contrasts between polished volume and wild texture. Below the image, at left, handwritten-style lettering reads “J. Saly inv. et sculp.” and the number “7.” appears at right.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the vase's symmetrical silhouette, then let your eye climb from the small foot to the fluted lower bowl. Pause at the open-mouthed central face: its moustache dissolves into scrolls and foliage. Finally, notice the two creatures gripping the rim—they turn a decorative object into a small, unsettling scene.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is plate 7 of *Suite of Vases*, an etching made in 1746 by Jacques François Saly (1717–1776), a French sculptor by training. Saly studied at the French Academy in Rome from 1740 to 1746, when he published a set of 30 etchings of vases. In the mid-18th century, designing ornamental vases and urns was especially popular. Saly began with basic antique vase forms, but moved away from classical ornament by embellishing them with a rich variety of fantastic creatures. It is not known whether this design was intended to be made in a specific material.

I focus on the contrast between the aged off-white paper and the dense black ink. The horizontally hatched background and the vertically lined shelf are not a real place, they are a graphic trick to make the vase float and its silhouette stand out. I notice the small fluted foot, the ribbed lower belly and the braided band separating the two bodies. I am struck by how the etching suggests two different textures: the polished form and the wildness of the foliage, scrolls and central mascaron.

I see this vase as a small constellation of shapes. The overall symmetry reminds me of how we arrange stars into patterns, but here every detail breaks the order: the grotesque face in the center with its open mouth, the two aquatic creatures coiled on the sides and the overflowing foliage. The hatched background works like a theatrical night sky that isolates the object. It is a 1746 design that does not copy the antique, but uses it as a base to imagine fantastic creatures.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
This vase looks like it is making faces and cannot stay still. In the middle there is a little man with long wavy moustaches who is shouting, and on the sides there are two little animals with curly tails climbing up as if they want to escape. Everything is covered with little leaves and waves and tiny shells. Below there is a striped little table and it even has a tiny crack on the right. If I look at it a lot I feel it is telling me a weird and funny story at the same time.
