What you would seeLo que verías

Sepia-toned photograph in vertical format taken from an elevated vantage point at the center of a cobbled street stretching straight into the distance. In the immediate foreground, centered and sharply focused, stands an ornate Victorian iron lamppost with a sculptural base that appears to include dolphins or cherubs, anchoring the visual axis. The street, paved with irregular, light-catching cobblestones, is flanked on both sides by three- and four-story brick buildings with narrow facades, rectangular sash windows with light trim, slate roofs and clustered chimneys. On the right, painted signs read THURMAN, STAFFORD SHOE WAREHOUSE and, lower down, CARTES DE VISITE 12 FOR 1s. 6 FOR 5s. A line of horse-drawn carriages moves along the center of the roadway, slightly blurred from motion. In the background, silhouetted against a pale, hazy sky, rises the square crenellated tower of a church. The light is diffuse and soft, likely morning, with gentle shadows and a light mist veiling the horizon. Small human figures, bollards and signs such as E. JONES PLUMBER & GLAZIER and WHITE FRIARS are visible on the sidewalks. The textures of cobblestones, brickwork and wrought iron are rendered with remarkable clarity.

This image is an 1865 albumen print from a wet collodion negative and its warm sepia tone is typical of the chemistry of the period. If you look closely you will see the detail of the iron lamppost in the foreground and the sharpness of the shiny cobblestones, which contrast with the hazy background. Notice the bricks, the light-framed windows and the many chimneys. The vertical format organizes the straight street that leads your eye to the church tower in the distance, a very careful topographical view.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Look at the light of this 1865 morning in Chester, soft and pale, with a haze that blurs the horizon. The Victorian lamppost at the center acts like an axis holding the composition together, as if marking the meridian of the street. The blurred carriages reveal the exposure time and the motion. The crenellated tower in the back stands out against the pale sky. It is a city of brick and slate photographed under a gentle light that wraps around everything.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This street looks super long! At the front there is a giant lamppost with decorations that look like dolphins. The ground is made of shiny little stones and in the middle there are horse carriages that look blurry, as if they were racing. On both sides there are tall brick houses with lots of windows and chimneys. If you follow the street with your eyes you get to a tower at the end. There are signs everywhere and tiny people walking on the sidewalk.
