What you would seeLo que verías

In the foreground, on an uneven meadow dotted with tiny white and pinkish wildflowers, five sheep with thick, curly fleece occupy the center of the composition. The largest, in profile with its muzzle lowered toward the grass, dominates the center-right; its fleece is light brown with dense shadows and an almost tactile texture, with matted, slightly dirty locks. Beside it, a paler, smaller lamb faces forward, ears small and gaze alert. Behind, another small whitish lamb walks toward the left, and further back, two more sheep graze with their backs turned. Slightly off-center, a young woman stands holding a piece of blue knitting in her hands, as if mending or knitting. She wears a pinkish long-sleeved blouse, a long blue skirt and a light cap covering her hair; her eyes are lowered, focused on her work. The background is a dense grove of dark green foliage and vertical trunks, with filtered light creating pale patches among the leaves. The brushwork is loose yet detailed on the animals, with an earthy palette of greens, ochres and browns, and soft natural light that models volumes without harsh contrast.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the large sheep in the foreground and follow the line of its back to its lowered muzzle; then lift your eyes to the shepherdess and her busy hands. Notice how the light filtering through the trees in the back frames the human figure and separates the animals from the dark foliage.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on the fleece of the large sheep at the center right, that light brown wool with dense shadows and matted locks that looks almost touchable. As a restorer I see the oil on wood panel and how the loose brushwork achieves that almost tactile texture without hardening the light. I am moved by the meadow with uneven grass and small white and pink flowers, so fragile. This earthy surface speaks of Charles-Émile Jacque's work around 1876 and his affection for rural life.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this scene as if it were a daytime sky filtered through trees. The grove in the back with dark green foliage and vertical trunks lets through pale patches of light, like constellations among leaves. The shepherdess in a pinkish blouse, long blue skirt and light coif is focused on her blue fabric, eyes lowered, separate from the flock. Five sheep occupy the meadow, each facing a different direction, like planets in calm orbits under a soft natural light without harsh contrasts.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Sheep are my favorites! The biggest one is in the middle with its head down and its wool looks fluffy but a little dirty, as if it played in the mud. There is a light-colored little lamb looking straight ahead with tiny ears and another whitish lamb walking to the left. In the back there are two more sheep eating grass. The shepherdess is knitting something blue and is not looking at us, and in the grass there are pretty little white and pink flowers.
