What you would seeLo que verías

The work consists of seven vintage photographic prints placed side by side on a bluish-gray cardboard mount, forming a panoramic sequence of the same nude man. In the foreground, the model dominates the vertical center of each frame, standing on a light, slightly dusty wooden floor with small wooden wedges under his feet. He is slender with a natural musculature, body hair on the chest and pubic area, a dark mustache and short curly hair. The first three views show him in left profile with arms raised and hands behind the head, torso slightly twisted and gaze lowered. The two central images show him facing forward, hands behind the back, looking directly at the camera with a calm expression. The final two show him from behind, upright, with back, buttocks and nape clearly visible. The background is a spare studio interior: wooden chairs, a folding screen, pale walls and the blurred reflection of another seated person, likely an assistant. The photographs have a warm sepia tone, irregular hand-trimmed edges, with visible creases, stains and cracks on the albumen paper that convey age and material fragility. The light is soft and diffused from above, gently modeling anatomical volumes without dramatic shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Follow the sequence from left to right as a 360-degree anatomical study. Notice first the repetition of the pose with raised arms and then the shift to frontal, direct eye contact. Look closely at the small tears in the paper and the blurred background figure, which reveal this as a real working studio session rather than an idealized composition.

ContextContexto

This is a work by Thomas Eakins (American, 1844–1916), dated c. 1883, made as albumen prints from glass negatives and held in the Photography department of the Cleveland Museum of Art. According to the source, it belongs to the so-called Naked Series, seven contact-printed photographs mounted on cardboard strips showing models from front, side and rear in contrapposto or evenly balanced poses. Eakins began in the early 1880s to use photography as a visual aid to painting, seeking a more accurate rendering of anatomy and the human form in motion. In addition to this series, he produced studies of the figure in motion and more traditional portraits and groups. The model is identified in the title as Joseph Smith; no further secure biographical details about him are known.

Curious detailDato curioso

Thomas Eakins was a pioneer in using sequential photography to study the body in motion, and his photographic experiments helped advance early chronophotography in the United States alongside the work of Eadweard Muybridge.

I focus on how fragile this piece is: seven albumen prints with hand-trimmed edges, mounted on a blue-gray cardboard support. I see creases, stains and cracks that speak of time and of the albumen paper itself. The shots form a sequence of the model standing on light wood, with small wedges under his feet, lit by diffuse light that softly models volume. It is an anatomical study made as a studio tool, not as an idealized portrait, and that shows in the serene, balanced posing.

I see this strip like an orbit of observation: the same body viewed from different angles, in profile, front and back, as if we were rotating around it. The seven warm sepia vignettes recall a time sequence, almost an attempt to capture movement and balance. I am drawn to the soft overhead light of the studio, which reveals forms without harsh shadows, and the austere background with chairs and a folding screen, which anchors us in an everyday work space of the nineteenth century.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are seven photos of the same man without clothes, side by side like a comic strip. In some he is in profile with his hands behind his head, in others facing forward with hands behind his back and in others with his back turned. He stands on a wooden floor and behind him you can see chairs and a folding screen. The photos look very old, in light brown tones, with little spots and folds. I like counting them and seeing how his pose changes little by little, as if he were playing at standing still.
