What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal etching in black ink and fine grays on yellowed paper, made of two leaves joined at the center and crowned by a broad upper band covered in dense columns of Chinese calligraphy. In the middle ground stands a large circular pavilion with a domed, segmented roof, open at the front and flanked by smaller tents and canopies. Around it, hundreds of tiny figures are arranged with almost geometric precision: on the left, long diagonal rows of soldiers or attendants; on the right, another compact crowd beside musicians and a raised platform. In the foreground, a few officials in long robes stand apart in small groups, one of them beneath a ceremonial parasol, creating pockets of emptiness that emphasize their rank. Behind the pavilion rises a two-story building with tiled roofs, surrounded by trees with minutely hatched foliage, walls, and scattered walkers. In the right background the landscape opens toward water crossed by a multi-arched bridge, with a distant hill and pagoda. The linework is fine and controlled, with cross-hatching for shade, foliage, and roofs. Despite the crowd, the scene feels still, orderly, and ceremonial.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First look at the small, widely spaced figures in the foreground, then follow the dense rows toward the central pavilion. Notice that the supposed banquet is above all a display of hierarchy and formation. Finally, raise your eyes to the inscription, which occupies as much authority as the image itself.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this etching belongs to a set commissioned by the Qianlong emperor to record in images the courage of his generals and soldiers in quelling rebellions in the Western Regions. The work dates to about 1765–74, while the poem is dated 1760. The "Western Regions" referred to present-day Xinjiang. Qianlong added a poem of his own to each etching, expressing appreciation and pride in this demonstration of military might. The set, now mounted as an album, consists of sixteen leaves plus two additional leaves of inscriptions. Its author is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

Although the title calls it a banquet, almost no one is seen eating: most figures stand in formation, suggesting that the celebration was also, and perhaps above all, a ceremony of imperial order.

I look at this print as a work on yellowish paper made of two sheets joined at the center, executed in black ink and fine grays. What holds me is the careful line work: cross-hatching for shadows, densely hatched foliage and clearly defined roof tiles. Above, a wide band holds dense columns of calligraphy. The paper shows a warm, aged tone, with color codes such as d8c7a8 and 2b2723. It is a ceremonial print, restrained, where every line seems to measure order and solemnity.

From my perspective, this banquet makes me think about how sky and earth are ordered on a single map. At the center a large circular pavilion with a vaulted, segmented roof, flanked by smaller tents, and around it hundreds of tiny figures in diagonal rows and compact groups. In the background, water with a multi-arched bridge, a hill and a distant pagoda. Everything is geometry and hierarchy, like human constellations arranged so power can be read at a glance, still and carefully calculated.

There are so many tiny people! They look like little ants standing in neat rows. In the middle there is a round house with a roof like an orange slice and more little tents at the sides. Some people are alone in long robes and one has a pretty parasol. Behind there are trees with lots of tiny leaves, a two-story house and even a bridge over the water with a pagoda far away. On top there are many letters I do not understand but they look important. Everything feels very tidy and quiet.
