What you would seeLo que verías

This nearly square painting on aged, beige silk presents a wide mountain landscape built up in successive layers. In the center, on a rounded, rocky hill, stands a large pine tree with a twisted, light-brown trunk and a broad canopy of dark green needles. It is the visual anchor of the scene and rises above a slope covered with small black flecks, fine lines, and sparse vegetation suggesting rough, stony ground. Behind it stand two slimmer pines and dense clusters of thin, straight trees drawn with brief vertical strokes. To the right, a steep mountainside descends in ochre, grey, and pale green washes, with terraces and small patches of cultivated land. To the left and in the distance, paler, hazier mountains fade toward the horizon beneath an almost empty sky. In the lower center, the hill opens into an arched grotto lit from within; inside, several tiny figures in orange, blue, and grey robes are seated as if in conversation. Below, on a pale path, other figures walk toward the entrance, one carrying a red bundle. In the upper left corner, vertical columns of black calligraphy and a small red seal balance the composition.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the great pine tree at the center and then let your gaze slide down the slope to the mouth of the cave. Notice how the tiny visitors inside the grotto, and those approaching along the path, change the scale of the mountain: what seemed like a hill becomes an immense place. Finally, look at the inscription in the upper left corner, which functions as both text and part of the composition.

ContextContexto

This album leaf, painted around 1588 by Song Xu (1525–c. 1606), belongs to a series of eighteen landscape views of Wuxing and its surroundings in southeastern China, produced during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). Song Xu was not a native of Wuxing, but he probably visited the area when he accepted the commission, since he carefully depicted each site and added a written comment to every leaf. On this sheet, according to the source, he notes that Grotto Mountain lies five li northwest of Hexi, where two streams converge, and that its cave can hold a hundred people. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

According to the artist's own inscription, the cave could hold a hundred people, yet in the painting only a handful of tiny figures are shown inside — a contrast that emphasizes the vastness of the landscape.

I pause to look at the aged beige silk that holds the scene, with its ochre and grey tones that have matured over time. I notice how the dark green pigment of the central pine remains intense, while the lighter washes of the mountains in the background have become subtle and hazy. I am drawn to the arch-shaped grotto, lit from within, and the tiny figures in orange, blue and grey robes, because their colors are still well preserved. I also look at the black calligraphy and the small red seal in the corner, which balance the whole composition.

I see this landscape as if it were a sky map laid on earth. The large twisted pine in the center is like a constellation marking the axis, and everything around it is arranged in layers like orbits. The hazy mountains in the distance are like faraway nebulae under an almost empty sky. I am intrigued by the illuminated grotto where tiny figures gather, it looks like a natural observatory open to the rocky hill. The two streams that meet nearby, mentioned in the inscription, remind me how in the sky everything also flows and converges.

I love searching for tiny people in this painting! I see a giant pine right in the middle of a hill covered with little rocks and black dots. Down below there is a small arch-shaped cave that glows inside and there are little people sitting there in orange, blue and grey clothes as if they are chatting. Others walk along a light-colored path, one carries a red bundle on his back. On the right there is a very steep mountain with terraces for farming. At the top left there are black letters and a little red stamp that looks like a sticker.
