What you would seeLo que verías
A small terracotta vessel stands upright at the center, photographed from the front against a smooth background that shifts from dark gray at the top to pale gray below. The flask has a flattened, rounded body, almost like a disc swollen at the bottom, with a narrow neck and a short, flared mouth whose rim is chipped and uneven. Two thick, arched handles rise from the shoulders and curve down to join the sides, leaving two triangular openings. Its color is a dry, sandy beige with gray-brown patches, reddish specks, and darker stains near the neck and on the lower left. The surface looks rough, porous, and dusty, worn by age. On the front, a large circular medallion in relief dominates the belly. It is framed by a ring of small raised beads, like a rosary or a punched border. Inside, barely legible because of wear, stands a frontal human figure with arms stretched out to the sides and a small triangular shape above the head; at the figure's feet there are two smaller forms that are hard to make out. A soft shadow falls to the right on the ground, giving the fragile object a quiet, sculptural presence.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the raised outline of the medallion, then look for the small figure at its center with arms spread wide. Only after that, notice the two curved handles and the chipped mouth: they remind you this sacred image was also a container meant to be carried. The wear on the surface changes it from a simple souvenir into evidence of travel and touch.
ContextContexto
According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this terracotta flask was made between 400 and 600 CE in the Byzantine world, at Abu Mena in Egypt. It bears Saint Menas, an early Christian martyr whose shrine stood in the desert southwest of Alexandria. Pilgrims probably used flasks like this to carry oil taken from the lamp burning over the saint's tomb. They were likely made near the shrine, and their decoration often pointed to their place of origin. The maker is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso
Saint Menas is traditionally shown in an orant pose, with arms raised in prayer, flanked by two kneeling camels — a reference, tradition says, to the camels that carried his body and stopped at the place where he was to be buried.

The conservatorLa restauradora
I focus on what time has left on this earthy beige terracotta with grayish and brown patches. I see the porous, dusty, rough surface with darkened areas near the short chipped neck. That central medallion in relief, surrounded by its beaded ring, is heavily worn, almost erased. As a conservator I would not try to fill anything, just stabilize that irregular rim and those thick arched handles so it can keep telling its story of fragility and its journey from Abu Mina.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
I see this bulging terracotta disc as a tiny planet. Its flattened rounded body reminds me of a moon seen head-on, with craters that are those reddish dots and dark patches. The circular medallion looks like an old map, with its beaded ring like a constellation marking the equator. I picture pilgrims in the desert of Egypt, under the dark gray night sky, using stars to reach the shrine of Saint Menas between 400 and 600 CE.

It looks like a little old chubby canteen, like a round clay backpack. It has two little ears on the sides that are its arched handles, leaving tiny triangular holes to poke your fingers through. On its belly it has a giant button with little dots around it and inside a man with open arms like saying hi! Its little mouth on top is chipped, like when you lose a tooth. I like to imagine it once held magic oil from a shiny little lamp.
