What you would seeLo que verías

The piece appears centered and suspended against a plain studio background that shifts from black at the top to light gray below. In the foreground, at the bottom, hangs a circular medallion of dull greenish metal, with a thick, slightly irregular rim. Its front face is pierced: it forms a wheel or flower with a center from which eight spokes radiate, opening round, triangular, and petal-shaped holes, plus a ring of perforations near the edge. Through the openings peeks a beige, fibrous, worn material, sandy in tone, contrasting with the metal. The metallic surface is rough, porous, and mottled, with dark greens, pale turquoise, and brown patches of corrosion; it looks fragile on some edges and more solid on others. At the bottom protrude two small feet or rivets. Above the medallion there is a rough hinge and an arched loop, from which hangs a little chain of fine, interlaced, also greenish links, topped by a large empty circular ring. Light comes from the front and above, creating soft highlights, shadows inside the piercings, and a short dark shadow beneath the medallion. Everything suggests a small, portable, very old object, made to be touched and worn close to the body.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the openwork wheel and look for the beige material showing through the holes. Then follow the chain upward to imagine how it hung from the neck. Finally, notice the green, pitted corrosion: it changes the piece from jewelry into evidence of age.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a Byzantine phylactery, or personal reliquary, made around 500–700, in the 6th to 8th centuries, probably in Egypt or Syria; the exact place is not known. It is made of copper alloy, described by the source as bronze, and was meant to be worn around the neck on a chain. Objects of this kind held something considered sacred and kept it close to the body, for devotion or protection. The author is unknown, which is common for small devotional metalwork from this period.

Curious detailDato curioso

According to the museum, the pendant still contains its original linen-wrapped relic, visible in beige glimpses through the openwork.

  1. What does it mean to carry something sacred against the body, rather than keep it in a temple or at home?¿Qué significa llevar algo sagrado pegado al cuerpo, en vez de guardarlo en un templo o en casa?
  2. How does the pierced design balance hiding and revealing what is inside?¿Cómo equilibra el diseño calado el gesto de ocultar y mostrar lo que hay dentro?

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my workbench the first thing I notice is the patina, that mottled green between turquoise and brown covering the copper alloy and telling years of oxidation, and the beige linen peeking through the openwork, fibrous and worn from handling, makes me think of hands that kept it with care, the eight spokes of the pierced flower let light and air in, and the hinge on top and the small rivets below show it opened to guard something intimate close to the body, fragile and sturdy at once.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see a small portable constellation, a wheel with eight spokes like a sun or a compass rose cut from greenish metal, the round and petal-shaped openings are like moon phases letting light through, it reminds me of a humble astrolabe meant to hang from the neck with its fine chain and large ring, suspended against a background fading from black to pale gray like a twilight sky, an object made to find direction not in space but in the unseen, close to the heart.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like an old metal cookie with lots of little holes, like a flower with eight little sticks that let you see a beige cloth hiding inside, it is all stained with green and brownish spots as if it was found buried, it has a tiny chain and a big little ring on top to wear as a necklace, I imagine it was a secret treasure to keep right against your chest so it would not get lost, tiny and with its little shadow underneath as if it were floating.
