tin-lead alloy with leather fragments

What you would seeLo que verías

The object appears alone and centered against a background that shifts from black at the top to a matte light gray surface below, where it casts a soft, diffuse shadow. It is a small, flattened vessel with an almost circular body, made to be held in the hand or hung from something. Rising from the top is a short cylindrical neck, open at the mouth, its upper rim slightly concave and uneven. Around its base survives a fragment of dark leather, wrapped like a strap; leather also shows along the right side in a reddish-brown tone. The front is covered in a worn relief cast in a grayish tin-lead alloy. Its surface looks rough, pitted, and darkened by age, with greenish, brown, and whitish patches. A central circle frames the Crucifixion: Christ stands on the main axis, with a cross-nimbus, outstretched arms, and a figure on either side. Below are two smaller figures, now barely legible. A wide band around them carries raised Greek letters, also heavily eroded. The edge of the disc is irregular, as if nibbled by wear, and the scene only becomes clear on close looking, among faint shadows and glints.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First, stand back to recognize the shape: a small, flat flask that could be carried. Then move closer until the worn central circle reveals the Crucifixion and the figures flanking Christ. Finally, follow the Greek letters around the rim: even where they are hard to read, they mark the boundary between the sacred scene and the object a pilgrim could touch and carry.

ContextContexto

According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, this pilgrim's ampulla dates to around 600 CE, from the early Byzantine period, and is associated with Byzantium and Palestine. It is made of a tin-lead alloy, with leather fragments, and belongs to medieval metalwork. One side shows the Crucifixion and the other, not visible here, the Ascension. Surviving ampullae often bore scenes from the life of Christ connected to the holy sites where, in Christian tradition, those events took place. The source notes that these images were not merely decorative: in early Christian belief they were considered carriers of divine power. The maker and the individual pilgrim who used this one are unknown.

This type is known as a 'Monza' or 'Bobbio' ampulla, named after groups of similar examples discovered in those two Italian towns.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you light it from the side you see what time has done: the tin and lead alloy is pitted, with greenish and whitish crusts and an edge nibbled by wear. The front relief is almost erased, yet you can still make out the central circle with the Crucifixion and the band of Greek letters around it. I pause at the dark leather rolled around the cylindrical neck, fragile and dry, a human trace that reminds us this was not a showcase piece but a portable object held and squeezed in a hand.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What I see first is a small portable eclipse. The almost circular body, like an eroded full moon, frames the Crucifixion at its center: Christ with a cross-shaped halo and a figure on each side, like a tiny system with its sun in the middle. The outer band with the Greek inscription reminds me of a ring of craters or an orbit. Worn and opaque, it no longer shines like new metal, but that gray patina with faint glints makes it look like a celestial object brought down to the hand and hung from the neck for traveling.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a little old magic cookie made of metal. It is tiny, flat and round, with a little neck on top like a tiny bottle for carrying holy water or a secret. It is all rough and spotted with green and brown because it is super old, like fourteen hundred years. If you get really close you see Jesus on the cross with his shiny halo and two little people on each side. Around it there are funny little letters in Greek and a rolled leather piece that was its handle for hanging it.
