What you would seeLo que verías

A rectangular print in black ink on cream-coloured paper, built from dense hatching and sharp contrasts between dark masses and blank areas of light. At the centre, an armoured knight with an exuberant plumed helmet rides a horse rearing over a dragon lying on its back. He raises one arm to strike, while his body twists with the movement; his armour is rendered with bands, plates and small parallel lines that suggest metal and volume. The horse, seen in profile with one wide-open eye and ornate harness, lifts its forelegs above the monster's pale, bulging belly. The dragon has a coiled tail, twisted necks and several grotesque heads, one near the lower right corner beside a broken weapon. The ground is littered with bones, skulls, ribcages and a nearly complete skeleton in the lower left. In the middle distance on the left, a small woman kneels in prayer with a lamb nearby, before distant hills. The upper half is crowded with a gnarled tree, hanging moss, rocks with soft, almost swollen forms, leaves and two small birds. From a branch at upper left hang two heraldic shields. The whole scene feels cramped, tense and highly detailed.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the knight's raised arm at the centre, then follow the horse's forelegs down to the dragon turned onto its back. Next, look toward the small praying figure on the left and the bones in the foreground: that contrast changes the triumph into a scene of previous victims and threatened innocence. Finally, notice the two coats of arms hanging from the branch at the top.

ContextContexto

Saint George Slaying the Dragon, c. 1510–1515, is a woodcut by Lucas Cranach (1472–1553), a German artist according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. In 1505 Cranach became court painter to Friedrich the Wise, Elector of Saxony, who encouraged printmaking as a sign of his court's artistic and intellectual vitality. The source notes that Friedrich's coat of arms, with crossed swords, and the arms of Saxony appear prominently on most of Cranach's prints. They may have indicated a retainer-like relationship, or worked as a kind of privilege: exclusive authorization to publish under Friedrich's legal protection. Saint George was a widely venerated Christian saint, traditionally represented as a dragon-slaying knight.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the dragon is not alone in defeat. Around the horse's hooves lie a complete skeleton, loose skulls and ribcages, suggesting that the place had been claiming victims long before the knight arrived.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the black ink on cream paper, built entirely from dense hatching and strong contrast between solid dark masses and untouched light areas. I notice how the knight armor is rendered with plates and short parallel lines suggesting metal volume, how the rearing horse harness is ornamented, and how the pale belly of the dragon stands out against bones and skulls below. Above, the gnarled tree, soft swollen rocks and two hanging heraldic shields show how precise the woodcut controls light and wear.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I am drawn to the contrast between deep black and untouched light areas, almost like a night sky cut by silhouettes. The knight and his rearing horse seem frozen at peak tension, while the dragon with coiled tail and multiple grotesque heads writhes below among bones. I notice the two small birds high up, the gnarled tree with hanging moss and the distant hills behind the kneeling woman with a lamb, which create immense depth behind the central violence.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

The horse stands on two legs and the man with the feathery helmet is about to hit the dragon! The dragon is belly up with its tail curled and it has several ugly heads, and on the ground there are lots of bones and skulls that are a little scary. I like to hunt for tiny details: not a puppy, it is a little lamb next to the tiny princess who is praying, the two little birds above the crooked tree and the two shields hanging from a branch like shiny medals.
