The image shows two paintings placed side by side, the front and back of a single album leaf. On the left, within a thin black border, a woman sits on the floor playing a long-necked string instrument resembling a tanpura, resting on a white cushion with a red rosette. She wears a red sari with white dots, a short green blouse, and white jewelry at neck, arms and ankles. Her skin is light, hair black and pulled back with an ornament. Before her on a mottled carpet in ochre and brown lie two small drums, one brown and one green with a white head. The background is pale yellow with green curtains and white fringe above, and two blue hanging lamps. The drawing uses bold black outlines with flat, vivid color. On the right, on an unframed cream paper ground, Radha sits on a pale yellow bench with curved legs, wearing a red sari and orange blouse with a green and black striped veil. Her skin is golden, eyes large and lined. Kneeling at her feet is Krishna with dark blue skin, a yellow dhoti and a red and black striped shawl, gently holding her foot. Behind them stands a tree with a pale trunk and blue-grey foliage. Both works show loose brushwork, saturated colors and visible graphite underdrawing.
Ambas obras muestran trazo suelto, colores saturados y contornos visibles a grafito.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Look first at the contrast between the intimate, domestic scene on the left and the devotional scene on the right. Notice how the intense red worn by both women connects the two images. Pay attention to small details: the drums on the floor and Krishna's hand holding the foot, which shift the reading from leisure to devotion.
ContextContexto
This leaf comes from a Kalighat album made around 1890 in Kolkata, Bengal, eastern India, as recorded by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is executed in gum tempera, graphite and ink on paper, the typical technique of Kalighat paintings sold as souvenirs to pilgrims and visitors. The artist is unknown, as is common for these popular workshops. The recto depicts a woman musician, a subject drawn from everyday life and entertainment; the verso shows Krishna attending to Radha, a central divine couple in devotional Hinduism. The work was gifted by William E. Ward in memory of his wife Evelyn Svec Ward and is housed in the Indian and Southeast Asian Art department. No further details about its original patron are recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
Kalighat paintings were produced in series near the Kalighat Temple in Kolkata and were among the earliest forms of Indian art made for mass sale in the late 19th century, using bright colors and rapid lines to appeal to pilgrims.

This double-sided sheet fascinates me for its simple and fragile technique. It is gum tempera with graphite and ink on paper, made around 1890 in Kolkata to be sold to pilgrims. Notice the thin black border on the obverse and the unframed cream background on the reverse, the expressive black line and the still vibrant flat color. The aged paper still shows the graphite sketch underneath. It was conceived as an ephemeral souvenir, not a grand artwork, which makes its preservation as a donation to the Cleveland Museum so valuable.

I linger on the details that organize the scene like constellations. On the left, the woman musician under two hanging blue lamps and between green curtains with white fringe. Her long tanpura rests on a white pillow with a red rosette and in front of her lie two small drums, one brown and one green. On the right, under a tree with bluish gray foliage, dark blue-skinned Krishna kneeling holds the foot of golden-skinned Radha, seated on a pale yellow bench. Two worlds on one sheet.

I like that this sheet has two drawings in one, like a secret. On one side a lady in a red sari with white dots and a green blouse plays a super long instrument that looks like a giant guitar. She has two little drums on the floor, one brown and one green with a white drumhead. On the other side is Radha in her red sari sitting very elegantly and blue Krishna crouching touching her foot very gently, as if she were his best friend. And behind them there is a blue tree that looks like from a fairy tale.
