If you look closely you will see how the tempera lets what is underneath show through, the graphite underdrawing and even the little stains of the aged paper over the pale yellow background. I love that thick, quick black outline that shapes Hanuman with his gray fur and clump of trees, Sita in her red sari, and the blue-skinned Indrajit with his golden crown and peacock feather. It was popular art made almost in series for pilgrims in Calcutta around 1890, with very vivid flat colors and workshop gestures that still tell us its material story today.

The lady in the red sari is being held by her hair and looks tiny in the middle. The blue one with the crown and peacock feather holds a shiny curved sword and opens his eyes wide with his tongue sticking out. Everything is painted with thick black outlines and flat colors like an old comic on a yellow background. I like imagining who will win.
