What you would seeLo que verías
A black-and-white print with bold strokes and expressive blotted areas, showing the grainy texture typical of zincography. In the left foreground, a standing woman seen in three-quarter view dominates the height; she wears a light headdress, a blouse with puffed sleeves and a long dark skirt rendered almost as a solid silhouette, holding a small curved sickle in her right hand that merges with the shadows. Her face is only roughly suggested with smudges. Behind her, in the middle ground, a smaller figure seen from behind in a light shirt and dark trousers appears to reap or gather sheaves. On the right foreground, a man bent over with his back to the viewer, in a light long-sleeved shirt and dark pants, cuts wheat with both hands. The field is a pale, mottled expanse with loosely sketched bundles of wheat. In the background, a compact dark band suggests houses with pitched roofs, trees with rounded crowns and two elongated vertical shapes, perhaps cypresses or steeples, under a pale sky where two faint disks read like suns. The composition is flat, without academic perspective, with strong contrast between intense black ink and creamy paper, and irregular edges characteristic of an artisanal print.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the solid black silhouette of the woman with the sickle on the left and follow the diagonal of the field toward the stooped man on the right. Notice how the dense black background flattens perspective and turns the landscape into decorative bands. Finally look for the small strokes of wheat sheaves and the sickle that reveal manual labor.
ContextContexto
Work by French painter and printmaker Émile Bernard (1868–1941), titled Les Bretonneries: The Harvesters (Les Moissonneurs), designed in 1889 and printed in 1896 as a zincograph. It belongs to 19th-century French culture and is part of the Prints collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art, purchased from the J. H. Wade Fund. The title refers to Brittany, a region Bernard visited and depicted alongside other Post-Impressionist artists drawn to rural life. Zincography, a lithographic variant on zinc plates, allowed a direct, expressive drawing style. No further specific information about the exact location depicted or the printing circumstances is given in the source.

Curious detailDato curioso
Zincography, a lithographic technique using a zinc plate instead of stone, was popular with late 19th-century artists because its lightness allowed free, brush-like or crayon-like marks.

If you look closely you will see this is not flat ink but a grainy, lively surface. This 1896 zincograph shows the bold stroke and blotchy marks drawn directly on the zinc plate, with that speckled cream and deep black that feels like workshop dust. I linger on the irregular edges and how the black of the woman's skirt and the field almost swallow the curved sickle. It is a handmade print, flat, without academic perspective, so the contrast between paper and shadow feels so honest and tactile.

I kept staring at the pale sky of the print because there are two faint discs that look like suns. They are not sharp stars but two soft circles above a field of hard work, almost as if daylight were doubled. I like to imagine how the harvesters live under that sky, measuring time by light rather than clocks. The scene is all in black and white, but that sky with two suns adds a mysterious touch, like a rural calendar hanging over the wheat and the dark houses in the distance.

The lady with the white headdress looks huge and a bit scary because her face is just smudges and her skirt is black like a big shadow. She holds a curvy thing that is a sickle for cutting wheat. Next to her there is a man bent over who is really working with both hands. Behind there is another tiny person and many dark little houses with round fluffy trees. Everything looks made with stamps and blotches, and I like counting how many people there are and searching for the wheat scattered on the pale ground.
