What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical photograph in faded sepia and brown tones, with irregular edges and the grainy texture of old paper. At the center, slightly to the right, stands a nearly life-size stone statue of the crowned Virgin holding the Christ Child on her left arm. She wears a tall, ornate crown, a veil, a long tunic, and a mantle with deep, asymmetrical folds falling to her feet; in her lowered right hand she seems to hold a small, dangling object. The Child, with a round head and small body, rests one hand on his mother's chest. Beneath the Virgin's feet is a carved, flattened figure that is barely legible, and the sculpture rests on uneven planks. To the left, in the background, are the legs and robes of other statues lined up on a wooden structure, with small figures at their feet. The ground is bare earth scattered with stones, rubble, coiled ropes, and timbers. On the right, a large wrinkled tarp covers something outside the frame. The light is diffuse, without harsh shadows, flattening the volumes while highlighting the softness of the Virgin's bowed face and downcast gaze.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the Virgin's lowered gaze and crowned head, then follow the drapery's long folds down to her feet. Next, look at what surrounds her — planks, rubble, and a tarp — and notice the contrast between a sacred figure and a work site. Finally, look at the row of statues in the background, awaiting their own place.
ContextContexto
According to the source, around 1853 Auguste Mestral was commissioned by sculptor and metalsmith Adolphe-Victor Geoffroy-Dechaume to photograph sculptures he was carving for Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. They were meant to replace figures damaged by weather or during the Revolution. The photograph is printed as a salted paper print from a paper negative, a common early photographic process. It is believed to have once belonged to Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, the architect leading the cathedral's restoration. The sculpture now stands in front of the rose window on the church's west, or main, facade.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual detail: the Virgin is not yet on the cathedral, but standing on uneven wooden planks on bare earth — a queen photographed, for a moment, like a piece of workshop equipment.
Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse
- How does the meaning of a sacred sculpture change when we see it on the ground, amid rubble, rather than high on a cathedral?¿Cómo cambia el sentido de una escultura sagrada cuando la vemos en el suelo, entre escombros, y no en lo alto de una catedral?
- What does this early photograph preserve that the finished, restored facade no longer shows?¿Qué conserva esta fotografía temprana que la fachada restaurada y terminada ya no muestra?
- Does the Virgin's calm expression belong to the stone figure itself, or does the workshop setting make it feel more human?¿La expresión serena de la Virgen pertenece a la figura de piedra o el entorno del taller la vuelve más humana?

What holds my attention is the texture of this salted paper print, with its sepia tones of #d8cbb6 and #b8a88f and the irregular edge of the paper negative. You see the statue of the crowned Virgin holding the Child, the mantle with deep folds and the tall crown, but also the workshop floor with uneven planks, rubble, stones and coiled ropes. It is an 1853 working photograph commissioned to document the replacement sculptures for Notre Dame, not a polished devotional image.

I enjoy looking at the diffuse light in this 1853 photograph, with no harsh shadows, flattening volumes like an overcast morning. The Virgin tilts her face with a downcast gaze and holds the round-headed Child on her left arm, both softly lit against the grainy background. To the left you can make out other statues lined up on wood and to the right a large wrinkled canvas. Like a patient observation, the image gradually reveals the serenity of the stone under even light.
The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
The Virgin looks huge and very calm, with her tall crown and long mantle that looks like a blanket with lots of folds. She holds the little Child Jesus on one arm and in her other hand she has something dangling. She stands on wooden planks and below there are stones, little sticks and ropes curled up like they forgot to sweep the workshop. Behind there are more statues lined up and a big wrinkled canvas. I like her soft face looking down as if she is watching over everyone.
