What you would seeLo que verías

This black-and-white wood engraving presents a bustling scene along the Canal Saint-Martin, set within a thin dark border on cream paper. In the immediate foreground two laborers frame the composition: on the left a man seen from behind, wearing a soft hat and a knotted scarf, carries a rough textured sack; on the right another man balances a bulky sack on his shoulder, his body leaning under its weight. Between them, along the lower quay, several smaller figures crouch and handle sacks near moored barges on dark, subtly rippled water. The middle distance is filled with the canal and stacked vessels, while the background rises with Parisian buildings: multi-story facades with tiled roofs, small windows some glowing, skylights and smoking chimneys, and a painted sign reading BAIN. The light is overcast and diffuse, rendered through dense cross-hatching and stippling that give smoke, water and stone a palpable texture. Fine engraved lines capture ropes, planks and the coordinated strain of collective manual labor at human scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the two strong foreground carriers who frame the view and lead your eye to the canal. Then follow the line of barges and the dark water toward the center, before lifting your gaze to the rooftops, chimneys and smoke that place labor within the industrial city.

Curious detailDato curioso

Auguste Lepère helped revive wood engraving as an original art form in late 19th-century France, rather than just a means of book illustration.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on how this black and white print on cream paper was made. It is a wood engraving from 1890, and you can see it in the cross-hatching and tiny dots that build the smoke, the dark water and the facades. The irregular black border frames the scene like a window onto the dock. I love the textures: the rough sack, the planks, the ropes. Everything is built with ink, without color, yet with very controlled contrast that preserves the sharpness of the craft.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this scene as an overcast sky over Paris. The light is diffuse, with no sun, the kind that lets you see smoke rising from chimneys and small windows, some lit, against tiled roofs. The canal acts like a dark mirror reflecting barges and buildings. Even though it is daytime, I imagine at night that sign reading BAIN and those faint lights would guide the workers. It is an urban landscape where the atmosphere weighs as much as the sacks.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

There are two men carrying giant sacks that look like heavy teddy bears! One is seen from behind with a hat and scarf, the other is leaning because it is so heavy. Below, on the dock, more people are crouched working next to the barges on the shiny water. Behind them there are tall houses with lots of windows and little smoke coming from chimneys. I like finding the sign that says BAIN and counting the barges. You can tell everyone is working as a team and trying very hard.
