What you would seeLo que verías

A full manuscript page on ivory-colored vellum, photographed at a slight angle, with the binding edge at left and several leaves visible at right. Most of the surface is covered by two dense columns of small Gothic script in brown-black ink, in remarkably regular lines. Touches of red highlight initials, marks, and selected words, with occasional blue breaking the uniformity. At top center, 'IOB' appears in red and blue decorated letters; at upper right is the number '205'. Inset into the text at the top of the left column is a small historiated initial with a gold frame and deep blue ground. Barely fitting inside are two figures: at right, Job sits bearded and hunched in a reddish-orange garment, his hands drawn together near his chest; at left, a standing woman in a pale veil and dark clothing extends her hand toward his ear, offering him a tiny gold jewel. Between the columns, a thin red vertical line descends like a thread, ending below the text in an irregular loop on the wide, empty lower margin. The light is even, revealing the smooth yet living surface of the prepared skin, its edges slightly darkened with age.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First find the tiny gold-framed scene at the top of the left column; it almost disappears into the text. Then lean in to see what the standing woman places in Job's hand or near his ear. That small gesture alters the whole page: it is not a scene of catastrophe, but of restored support.

ContextContexto

This is folio 205r of a Bible made in southern France between about 1275 and 1300, possibly in Toulouse, according to the source data; the author is unknown. It was executed in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum and is now at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Its text is the Latin Vulgate, Jerome's fourth-century translation. In the thirteenth century, Bibles began to be produced as single volumes with an officially sanctioned order of books and chapters. The decoration is hierarchical: historiated initials open each book, as here at the Book of Job, helping readers navigate a vast text.

Curious detailDato curioso

The small jewel is not decorative guesswork: Job 42:11 tells that, after his trials, his brothers and sisters came to him and each gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring — a detail medieval artists often rendered as an earring offered to Job.

The conservatorLa restauradora

If you look closely you will see this page is prepared animal skin, ivory-colored vellum, not paper. Its smooth surface shows a little darkening at the edges from age. I notice how the materials hold up: the brown-black ink of the small Gothic script, the touches of red and blue, and the gold frame around the small painted initial that still shines. The thin red vertical line between the columns is the scribe's ruling. Everything is very regular, which shows careful work meant to make this book last for centuries.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at this page and think of coordinates. At the top it says IOB in red and blue, like a sign telling you which book you are in, and on the right the number 205 so you do not get lost. They are like maps for navigating a universe of text. The small painted initial is a little constellation: deep blue background like a night sky, gold frame like an orbit, and two figures close together. That tiny gold jewel she holds out shines like a little star. The whole system is ordered in two dense columns, like lines of calculations.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This page is huge and totally full of tiny letters! They look like little ants lined up in two groups. At the top there are big colorful letters that say IOB. The prettiest part is the tiny picture tucked between the letters. There is a bearded man in orange reddish clothes curled up, and a lady with a light veil putting something shiny on his ear, like a little gold earring. And there is a super long thin red line going down between the letters that ends in a little squiggle at the bottom, in the empty space.
