ink, tempera and gold on vellum
What you would seeLo que verías
An open book fills the frame, with almost the entire right-hand page visible and only a narrow strip of the facing page at the left. The support is cream-colored vellum, smooth and slightly uneven at the edges, with broad empty margins, especially at the bottom and right. Two dense columns of small Gothic script in dark brown and black ink cover the upper two-thirds of the page. Red marks, touched initials, and small rubrics punctuate the text and help break up its visual rhythm. At the top, a running title alternates red and blue letters; in the upper right corner appears the number 257. In the left column, a medium-sized historiated initial in deep blue, pink, and gold encloses a figure. Near the top of the right column, the main initial stands out as a small square panel with a gold ground and dark border: an elderly, gray-bearded man in a loose rose-red garment sits in profile, holding and unrolling a scroll. Above him, in a reduced space, a small bust emerges. Fine ruled lines, faint stains, and the grain of the vellum become visible when looking slowly.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the wide, quiet margins and the density of the two columns, then look for the two decorated initials that interrupt the text. Notice the larger one near the top of the right-hand column: gold, a seated figure, and a tiny bust above him change a page of writing into an image to be contemplated. Compare its size with that of the initial on the left; that difference in scale is also a form of information.
ContextContexto
This is folio 257r of a Bible produced around 1275–1300, probably in southern France, possibly Toulouse, according to the source; the maker is unknown. It is drawn and painted in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum, and is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. The page opens Ecclesiasticus, also known as the Book of Sirach. Its Latin text belongs to the Vulgate, Jerome's translation, which became the Roman Church's official version. In the thirteenth century, Bibles began to circulate as single volumes with a sanctioned order of books and chapters. Their decoration was hierarchical: the most important openings received the largest and richest initials.

Curious detailDato curioso
A surprising visual fact: on a page containing hundreds of words, divine authority is shown by a very small bust emerging above the initial, while the human author below occupies the center with his scroll.

I linger on the creamy vellum and how the empty lower margin lets the page breathe. The main initial is a technical jewel: deep blue with pink and burnished gold framing the grey-bearded elder in his rosy red tunic unrolling the scroll. Above him, the tiny bust is minimal yet gathers light. Notice the ruling lines, faint stains, and the red and blue running title at the top. Everything speaks of tempera, ink, and Gothic patience.

I see this folio as an ordered sky. The two dense columns of Gothic script are regular constellations of brown and black ink, punctuated by red marks like guide stars. The golden initial is a little sun where seated Sirach holds his scroll, and the bust above seems to peek from a higher realm. The number 257 at the top is our coordinate. In this portable universe from 1275 to 1300, text and image orbit with precise hierarchy.

Hi! The book is huge and almost fills the whole picture. There are lots of tiny brown letters packed together and little red touches like secret notes. My favorite is the painted letter in blue and pink with gold where a grey-bearded grandpa lives with his long scroll. Up top there is a tiny little head watching him. It has a red and blue title and the number 257 like its house address. Did you spot it?
¡Hola!
