What you would seeLo que verías

An open bound volume is seen from front, slightly angled, with the right-hand page almost fully visible and only a sliver of the facing page at left. The support is cream, matte, aged vellum, with soft edges, faint stains and a subtle darkening toward the margins. The number “370” appears at upper right. Across the top runs a running title in blue and red letters with small flourishes. The Latin text fills the page in two narrow, very regular columns of Gothic script in dark brown ink, with red touches that punctuate headings and initials. In the left column there are two decorated initials set into the text. The upper one is smaller, deep blue with gold ornament and fine swirling tendrils extending into the margin. Below it, the larger historiated initial, framed in blue and gold, contains three figures with pale faces and grave expressions. At center, an older bearded man raises an arm in the act associated with the killing; the other figures are compressed beside him in dark and reddish garments. The scale is miniature: the bodies fit inside a letter while the surrounding writing remains calm, dense and orderly. The light is even, with no strong shadows, emphasizing the contrast between parchment, gold, blue and red ink.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the dense Latin text and feel how it surrounds the image, then move to the lower initial on the left column. Notice how a violent biblical episode is compressed into a tiny, orderly space. That contrast between calm writing and dramatic action changes how the page is read: it is beautiful, but also unsettling.

ContextContexto

This page, folio 370r, comes from a Latin Bible made in southern France, probably Toulouse, between about 1275 and 1300, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is painted in ink, tempera, and gold on vellum. The book uses the Vulgate, Saint Jerome’s Latin translation, which was the official Bible of the Roman Church. In the 13th century, Bibles began to circulate more often as single volumes with an established order of books and chapters. Decoration was hierarchical: larger initials marked major openings, historiated initials marked each book, and smaller illuminated initials marked prologues. Here, the initial opens First Maccabees and shows Mattathias killing an idolatrous Jew, an episode from that book. The author is unknown.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual observation is that the killing is not shown in a large scene, but hidden inside a letter: at first glance the page looks like a quiet wall of text, and only on closer looking does the violence appear.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

If you look closely, you will see how the vellum breathes: a matte creamy tone, soft, with faint stains and edges slightly darkened by time. The Latin text is laid out in two very regular columns in brownish ink with red touches. I pause at the initials: the upper one in deep blue with gold and delicate vine extensions, and below it the larger historiated initial, framed in blue and gold, holding three tiny figures. The gold still catches light, and its contrast with the parchment reveals tempera technique, care, and hierarchy in the book's decoration.

Like reading an orderly sky, I see two dense, calm columns working as a constellation of Gothic script. At the top, the title in blue and red and the number 370 act as coordinates. The initials are guiding stars: the small one with gold marks a prologue and the larger one, in blue and gold, opens the book of Maccabees. Inside that letter fit three pale faces and a raised arm. It is striking how something so tiny holds such an intense scene while the rest of the page stays stable and luminous.

This letter is like a little house! Among many tiny letters in two columns, there is a big blue letter with gold and inside there are three very small people. One is a bearded man raising his arm and the other two are huddled close in dark and reddish clothes. Above there is another blue letter with gold and little tails that look like tiny plants. The book is open and you can clearly see the creamy color of the page, with the number 370 at the top. I like hunting for the red and blue among all the text.
