What you would seeLo que verías

The vertical sheet of grayish, almost empty paper is occupied only in its upper third by the tilted head of a young man emerging behind a pale, curved surface that crosses the foreground from the left toward the center. That undrawn mass works like a backrest or an intervening shoulder and leaves almost the entire body outside the frame. The face, frontal yet leaning, lowers its gaze with half-closed eyelids and a slight, tense, mocking smile. Skin is suggested by the tone of the paper itself, touches of white, and soft graphite shadows; the nose and forehead receive the strongest light. The hair, parted and wavy to the ears, combines gray graphite with vivid strokes of orange-red chalk that give it volume and make the sitter visibly red-haired. At right, the shoulder and dark garment are resolved with parallel black hatching, denser beside the neck. Behind the head, diagonal shading creates a vibrating ground and separates the figure from the paper. Below remains a broad empty zone, barely marked by grain, a faint stain, and, along the lower edge, a handwritten inscription at left and a small mark at right.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Begin with the vast empty space at the bottom and let your eye rise until the head appears, as if it were surfacing. Then compare the soft modeling of the face with the aggressive hatching of the clothing and background. The strand of red hair and the half-closed gaze change the reading: what first seems like rest begins to look like vigilance or mockery.

ContextContexto

Paul Gavarni (French, 1804–1866) made this sheet in 1853 as a study for *L'Oiseau de passage* (*The Bird of Passage*), a lithograph in a series on Parisian courtesans produced for the newspaper *Paris*. According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the title probably refers to the young man: *messieurs de passage* were casual lovers who supplemented the regular support a courtesan received from a protector. The drawing belonged to the important Gavarni collection formed by writers Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, who saw in him an artist capable of capturing the essence of nineteenth-century life. It is now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, bequest of Muriel Butkin.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Goncourt brothers cited this very drawing in their *Journal des Goncourt* and called it “the study of this cruel redhead,” a phrase that seems to arise directly from the contrast between the orange hair and the young man's sly expression.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Is this young man resting, spying, or waiting for someone, and what visual clues support each reading?¿Este joven descansa, espía o espera a alguien, y qué indicios visuales sostienen cada lectura?
  2. How does the large expanse of blank paper change our perception of a head drawn at relatively small scale?¿Cómo cambia el gran espacio de papel en blanco nuestra percepción de una cabeza dibujada en escala relativamente pequeña?
  3. Why might red chalk have been chosen for the hair, and how does that color affect the character's personality?¿Por qué pudo elegirse la sanguina para el cabello y cómo afecta ese color a la personalidad del personaje?

From my workbench I love how this 1853 sheet breathes with so little. The grayish paper itself becomes the young man's skin, with just white for the light on the forehead and nose and soft graphite for shadows. What I keep looking at is the orange sanguine in the wavy hair, which turns him reddish and gives volume without hard outlines. That pale curved form in the foreground fascinates me because it crops out almost the whole body and forces us to preserve that large empty lower area with its grain and faint stains.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this portrait like a night observation. The tilted head with downcast eyes feels like a quarter moon, brightly lit on nose and forehead and darkened at the edges by diagonal shading that separates it from the background. That reddish hair made with orange strokes reminds me of a solar corona, vibrant against the grayish paper. The empty curved form crossing the foreground acts like a horizon hiding the rest of the body, leaving below a vast empty sky interrupted only by the handwritten inscription along the bottom edge.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This boy looks at me like he is teasing just a little with his crooked smile and almost closed eyes. I love his orange wavy hair down to his ears, it looks like someone drew it with a bright crayon on the gray paper. He is hiding behind something white and curved, maybe a chair or a giant shoulder, and you can only see his head and a little bit of black clothing with tiny lines. Below there is a huge empty space and at the very bottom there are tiny handwritten letters.

  1. #1

Look at the young man's hair in the drawing: what vivid color made with sanguine did Gavarni use to paint it?

    HintPista

Look at the wavy strokes reaching down to the ears, they mix gray graphite with a very vivid warm tone.

  2. #2

In the foreground there is a pale, curved, blank form that hides almost the whole body: what does it hide and where does it cross from?

    HintPista

Notice the area below the face, an undrawn surface cuts off the figure and leaves a lot of empty paper below.

  3. #3

At the very bottom, along the lower edge of the sheet, what two marks can you find if you look closely?

    HintPista

Scan the large empty lower area all the way to the edge of the paper.
