pen and brown ink
What you would seeLo que verías
The image shows a pen and brown ink drawing on aged, light cream paper. At the center, a nude male figure is seen from behind in three-quarter view, head turned to the right in profile. His right arm stretches out horizontally, index finger pointing firmly beyond the frame, while the left arm rests behind his back near a lyre set on a small pedestal or step. The musculature of the back, shoulders, buttocks and legs is rendered with fine parallel and cross-hatching that sculpts volume while keeping a sense of lightness. A cloak flows behind the torso, suggested with just a few fluid, undulating lines that remain sketchy. The hair is curly and loosely tied. The background is empty, giving the figure breathing space and monumental presence. In the upper right there is a handwritten signature in ink. Lower center bears a capital B and a cursive annotation. Subtle stains, slightly uneven edges and soft paper texture are visible, conveying the intimate character of a studio study rather than a finished presentation piece. Light falls evenly, with shadows built purely by ink density.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the outstretched arm that organizes the whole sheet, then follow the back to see how hatching builds muscle and torsion. Notice the contrast between the highly modeled body and the barely sketched cloak, a clue to the artist’s trial of forms. End with the lyre and handwritten notes that reveal its function as a working study.
ContextContexto
This is a preparatory study by French artist Paul Baudry (1828–1886), dated to the late 1860s according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. It was made for the ceiling paintings of the Grand Foyer of the new Paris Opéra, a commission Baudry received in 1864. It depicts the god Apollo from behind as he points toward the satyr Marsyas, his rival in a mythological musical contest. The pose and athletic body type recall Michelangelo’s models, especially the David, which Baudry studied during a trip to Italy inspired by the Sistine Chapel frescoes; no further details about this sheet’s specific genesis are recorded.

Curious detailDato curioso
While preparing the Paris Opéra ceilings, Baudry traveled to Italy to study Michelangelo in person, and this rear-view Apollo deliberately echoes the monumental energy of Michelangelo’s David created over three centuries earlier.

- How does seeing a powerful god only from behind shape your reading of authority and vulnerability?¿Qué te hace sentir ver a un dios desnudo y poderoso mostrado solo de espaldas?
- What happens to the meaning of the pointing gesture when the target is absent from the sheet?¿Cómo cambia el significado del gesto de señalar cuando no vemos a quién señala?
- What connection do you see between detailed anatomy and the swiftly sketched drapery?¿Qué relación encuentras entre la precisión del cuerpo y la ligereza de la capa inacabada?

What draws me in here is the light cream paper and how the brown ink lives on it. I see fine shading made with parallel and cross-hatched lines that shape the back, shoulders and legs without heaviness. I love the economy of line in the sketched cape, just suggested with fluid strokes, and the light stains and small folds that tell us this is a workshop study. The handwritten signature at the top right and the note with the letter B below remind us this sheet is preparatory work, not a finished piece, made to resolve volume and gesture before painting on a large scale.

I see Apollo from behind, at the moment he stretches his right arm and points with his index finger outside the frame, while the lyre rests on a pedestal. It is a pointing gesture that reminds me of how we indicate directions in the sky. The body is turned three-quarters and the background is empty, which focuses all attention on the action. We know this is a study from the late 1860s for the ceiling of the Grand Foyer of the new Paris Opera, where Apollo points at Marsyas after their musical contest in the classical myth.

This man has no clothes on and shows us his back, but he turns his head to the right. His right arm is stretched out and he points with his finger as if saying look over there! With the other arm he holds himself from behind. Next to him there is a lyre resting on some steps and behind him hangs a little cape drawn with loose lines that looks like it is flying. I like his curly hair with a little ribbon. The paper looks old in a cream color and around him there is nothing, just him in the middle as if he were practicing a pose.
