What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical page of cream-colored parchment, aged and slightly irregular at the edges, holds at the top a miniature framed by a painted architectural border in ochre, gold, and reddish tones, imitating columns, capitals, and a pedestal. Within that false window, Saint Christopher dominates the center, a large bearded man with brown hair and a white cloth around his head. He wades through a river of pale blue horizontal strokes, wearing a deep blue tunic with gold trim and a ample mauve-brown mantle draped over one shoulder and gathered at his waist. His left hand grips a tall, knotted wooden staff; his right hand rests on his hip as he advances with his legs in the water. On his shoulders sits the Christ Child, small, blond, and crowned, in a gray garment, one hand resting on the saint's head. To the left, on a green bank, a tiny hooded monk in a brown habit watches the scene. Behind them rise green hills, dark trees, a saturated blue sky, and distant bluish mountains. Below the image, Latin text in black Gothic lettering with red initials occupies the lower half, introduced by headings also in red.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the saint's effort: his hand on his hip, his tilted head, and the water around his legs. Then look for the two smaller figures—the Christ Child who weighs more than he appears to, and the hermit waiting on the bank—and notice how the painted architectural frame turns the page into a small window. Finally, descend to the prayer below: the image is not an illustration apart from the text, but its visual beginning.

ContextContexto

This is folio 101v of a printed Book of Hours for the Use of Rome, produced in Paris in 1510 by Guillaume Le Rouge, active between 1493 and 1517, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 112 folios printed on parchment and bound. Books of Hours were prayer books for private devotion, widely circulated in the late Middle Ages. This page belongs to the Suffrages, prayers addressed to saints, and is dedicated to Saint Christopher. According to his well-known legend, Christopher carried a child across a river who grew heavier and heavier; the child then revealed himself as Christ. For that reason, Christopher was invoked as protector of travelers.

Curious detailDato curioso

In the late Middle Ages it was widely believed that whoever looked at an image of Saint Christopher in the morning would be protected from sudden death that day, which explains why his figure was painted on a large scale in so many churches.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the support: it is aged cream-colored parchment with barely irregular edges, on which the Book of Hours was printed in 1510 and then hand-painted for the miniature. I look at the architectural border in ochres, golds and reddish tones that frames the scene, and how the dense blue pigments of the river and the saint’s tunic contrast with the black gothic text and the red rubrics below. I am interested in how the paint covers the print and in the preservation of folio 101v within its 112 bound folios.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer, I am drawn to the background of this miniature on folio 101v: a saturated blue sky above green hills, dark trees and bluish mountains in the distance. It is a painted landscape, not an observed one, but it uses color to create depth. I think about how the printer Guillaume Le Rouge, active in Paris, assembled this Book of Hours for private devotion and how the blue of the river, in horizontal strokes, and the intense blue of the tunic guide the eye toward the center where Christopher carries the Child.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

He is a giant crossing a river! Saint Christopher is huge, bearded, with his mauve brown cloak and his blue tunic with gold trim, and he carries a tiny blond child with a crown on his shoulders. I like that the water is just little blue lines and that he walks with a tall knobby stick. On the little green bank there is a tiny hooded monk in brown watching them pass. Below there are many little black letters with red ones that I do not understand, but up top it all looks like a story about a very strong traveler.
