A single parchment page, creamy and slightly aged, enclosed by a painted architectural frame in matte gold with columns, bases, and a semicircular pediment at the top. Inside the frame, in the upper half, is a small hand-colored scene set in an interior with pink walls, carved details, and an open doorway receding into shadow. At the center stands a bishop in a white robe, blue and gold cope, and a tall mitre; with his hands he joins those of a young couple. The man, on the left, wears a green and blue tunic with gold trim and blue stockings. The woman, on the right, wears a long rust-orange dress with white sleeves, a blue skirt patterned with gold, and a small crown. Four witnesses flank them, in red, blue, and muted tones, with calm faces and hair falling to their shoulders. Above, in a blue oval medallion, an orange crab signals the zodiac sign of Cancer. Below the image is a block of Gothic text in black and red ink, with a large blue and gold initial; some lettering from the reverse side shows faintly through the parchment.

Start with the golden frame and the crab at the top, which announce the month, then move down to the joined hands at the exact center. Notice how the sacred scene and the practical list of days share the same page, and how the hand-applied color softens the regularity of the printed text.

ContextContexto

This is folio 7v, the June calendar page, from a printed Book of Hours for the Use of Rome, produced in Paris in 1510 by Guillaume Le Rouge, a French printer active between 1493 and 1517, according to the Cleveland Museum of Art. The volume has 112 folios printed on parchment and bound. Books of Hours were devotional books for laypeople, organized around prayers for different times of day and a calendar of saints' feasts. In this period, Parisian printers combined printing with hand-painting to imitate illuminated manuscripts. Which specific workshop painted this copy is not known.

Curious detailDato curioso

The blue and gold 'KL' at the start of the text stands for Kalendae, the Latin name for the first day of the month — and it is also the origin of the word 'calendar'.

This June folio 7v makes me think about the mixed technique from 1510. It is cream-toned parchment, printed by Guillaume Le Rouge in Paris and then hand-colored to look like an illuminated manuscript. I notice the matte gold frame with columns and a rounded pediment, the block of gothic text in black and red ink with a blue and gold initial, and how the writing from the other side shows through slightly. In the central scene the pigments remain vivid inside the pink-walled interior.

For me the key to this calendar page is the sky. At the top, inside the blue oval medallion, there is an orange crab marking the sign of Cancer, which belongs to June. That detail linked the passage of the year with the saints' feasts of the Book of Hours, which organized prayers for different times of day according to the Use of Rome. The book has 112 folios and here we see how the Parisian press combined devotion and timekeeping in a single portable object.

I like to search for things like a game. In the middle there is a bishop with a blue and gold cape and a tall mitre marrying a young couple, he in green and blue and she in an orange dress with a blue skirt with gold. On the sides there are four witnesses in red and blue clothes looking serious. Everything is inside a very fancy gold frame that looks like a little house. And at the top there is a tiny orange crab that is the zodiac sign, it is small but it shines a lot!
