What you would seeLo que verías

This is a black-and-white lithograph, a horizontal image framed by a thin line on light-colored paper with wide margins. Below, outside the scene, are the printer's line, the title “MISÈRES DE LA GUERRE,” and the date 1812. At the center, a small group of soldiers struggles across uneven, snow-covered ground. The figure in the middle, taller and more upright, wears a high military cap, a thick scarf, and a coat that looks furry or fringed; leaning on a stick or long weapon, he gazes toward the viewer with a weary face. To his left, a hooded figure covers part of the face with a long, dark cloak. To the right, another soldier bends forward, barely held up amid the snow. Behind them, more heads and blurred silhouettes are only suggested. The foreground is scattered with stones, mounds, weapons, and remains half-covered by snow: an abandoned rifle on the left and, on the right, a dark object that might be a helmet or a pack. The background fades into a gray, nearly empty expanse, crossed by a flock of small birds flying diagonally to the right. The grainy texture of the lithographic stone creates fog, cold, and a diffuse light with no clear shadows.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the three central figures and compare their postures: one still stands upright, while the others hunch or sink down. Then look down at the rifle and the dark object in the snow, and finally follow the birds; their orderly movement contrasts with the stillness of the soldiers.

ContextContexto

According to information from the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a lithograph dated 1812 by Nicolas Toussaint Charlet (1792–1845) and Bertaut, from the series *Moral and Philosophical Alphabet for the Use of Little and Big Children*. The print also bears the inscriptions “Imp. Bertauts, Paris” and “Alliance des Arts.” Charlet was a French artist known for military scenes; here, the title *Misères de la Guerre* —*Miseries of War*— and the date probably refer to the disaster of Napoleon's campaign in Russia that same year, although the source does not state this explicitly. The exact size and the complete history of this particular impression are not known from these details.

Curious detailDato curioso

A striking visual detail: the birds are the only element that moves with ease. Their diagonal flight crosses the empty sky while, below them, the men barely manage to move forward through the snow.

  1. What story does this image tell without showing a battle or an enemy?¿Qué historia cuenta esta imagen sin mostrar ninguna batalla ni al enemigo?
  2. How do the snow, the empty sky, and the birds change the way we understand the soldiers' defeat?¿Cómo cambian la nieve, el cielo vacío y las aves la manera de entender la derrota de los soldados?
  3. Why might an image about the miseries of war have been included in an alphabet intended for children and adults?¿Por qué una imagen sobre las miserias de la guerra formaría parte de un alfabeto pensado para niñas, niños y adultos?

If you get close to the paper you will see how delicate this black and white is. It is not flat ink but the grain of the lithographic stone that creates that grey fog and dirty snow. I notice the wide margins and the thin line framing the scene, and how the text below — MISÈRES DE LA GUERRE, 1812, Imp. Bertauts — is part of the print. The soft wear in the center suggests the stone was inked with light pressure to achieve that diffuse light with no clear shadows.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

What captivates me most is not the soldiers but the sky. That grey expanse, almost empty, with no sun or stars, is an overcast sky that wraps everything in cold. Only tiny birds cross diagonally to the right, like dark dots in the haze. It makes me think how, when the horizon is erased by snow and fog, you lose your sense of direction. Here the wintry landscape is the real protagonist that defeats the group.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks so cold just looking at it. The three soldiers in front look very tired walking through the snow. The one in the middle is the tallest, wearing a tall hat, a scarf and a furry coat, leaning on a long stick. Next to him one covers his face with a cloak and the other is bent over as if he cannot go on. On the ground there are stones and a rifle left behind, and further back you see more little heads. And above, tiny birds are flying!

¡Y arriba vuelan unos pajaritos chiquitos!
