Ernst Fries (German, 1801–1833); Mohr & Winter, Heidelberg · 1820 · Germany, 19th century
lithograph printed in black with two tint stones: pale ochre overall and grey selectively
What you would seeLo que verías
A rectangular lithograph, centred on a wide margin of bone-white paper, shows a landscape in pale ochre, grey, and black. In the upper centre, on a wooded hill, rises a large castle with towers, pitched roofs, numerous windows, crenellated walls and ruined sections, brightly lit against a pale sky with soft clouds. Dense trees and shrubs cover the slope and frame the scene at left and right, rendered with fine hatching and dappled shadow. In the middle ground are sloping cottage roofs, a stone house with a gabled roof at right, and a long dark retaining wall that stretches across the image. At lower right, worn stone steps lead from the house down to a rocky riverbank, where three small figures stand or sit beside cloth spread on the stones. Below, in the foreground, a narrow river flows past rocks; two figures punt a small flat boat, one seated and one standing with a pole. The human presence is tiny beside the castle. Below the image, elegant lettering gives the title in German and French, with small printer's inscriptions at the corners. The overall light is warm and even, like late afternoon, and the texture suggests stone drawn with a grainy crayon on paper.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Begin with the castle, brightly lit against the sky, then let your gaze descend through the trees and rooftops toward the river. Notice how the small figures in the boat and on the shore change the scale: what first seems monumental becomes part of everyday life. Finally, read the German and French captions below; this was a view meant to travel.
ContextContexto
This print is 'Six Views of Heidelberg Castle: Eastward', dated 1820, by Ernst Fries (German, 1801-1833), published by Mohr & Winter in Heidelberg, according to the source data from the Cleveland Museum of Art. It is described more precisely in the image's own caption as the castle seen toward the northeast. It is a lithograph printed in black with two tint stones, one pale ochre overall and one grey used selectively. It belongs to a series of six views. By 1820 Heidelberg Castle, already partly in ruins, was a celebrated subject for German Romantic landscape artists, although the specific circumstances of this series' commission are not known from the data provided.

The small '1.' in the upper right corner marks this as the first plate in the set of six views announced by the English title, while the image itself carries captions in both German and French.

If you get close to the bone-colored paper you will notice the grain of the lithographic stone, I love how Ernst Fries used two inks, a pale ochre that tints the whole scene and a gray that gently shades the hill and the castle. Notice the crenellated walls glowing against the sky, the fine hatching of the trees and the dark wall crossing the middle ground, everything breathes calm afternoon light and careful printing craft.

I keep looking at the light, it feels like late afternoon, even and warm, like when the sun is low and everything looks golden but without harsh shadows. The castle up on the hill is brightly lit against a pale sky with soft clouds, almost like a beacon. Down below the river is small and dark, and the tiny people are minuscule next to that huge architecture, it makes me think how small we are under the sky.

The castle on top looks gigantic, with lots of towers and windows, it looks like a princess castle but a little broken. I like to search for the tiny people, there are some sitting by cloths on the rocks and two on a little boat on the river, one with a long pole. There are many trees all around and stone steps going down to the water, I would want to run down to splash and wave at the castle.
