What you would seeLo que verías

A tall civic tower rises at the center of a black-and-white lithograph, dominating a cobbled square under a vast, cloudy sky. Its lower section is a massive, almost windowless block of pale stone, marked by stains, seams, and a few tiny openings. Above a balustrade the tower narrows: there is a large round clock, arched openings with louvered shutters, a domed roof, and a small lantern crowned by a spire and weathervane. Two streets frame the view. On the left stands an ornate iron fountain, its metalwork curling into a sphere over a stone basin, with sacks, buckets, and small figures gathered around it; steep-roofed houses recede behind. On the right, taller shuttered buildings cast deep shade over crates, bundles, and a horse-drawn cart. At the foot of the tower, women in long skirts and bonnets talk in a small group, children crouch nearby, and other passersby move into the distance. Fine hatching models the clouds, stone, and wet-looking cobbles, while strong contrasts of light and shadow give the quiet scene a monumental scale. Printed titles and credits appear in the margin below.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the tower and follow it from the small weathervane at the top down to the plain stone base. Then look to the edges: the fountain on the left and the cart on the right bring the monument back into everyday life. Notice how the tiny windows and the long shadow on the clock face make its height feel even greater.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is an 1835 lithograph on chine collé by Louis Haghe and the Thierry Brothers, after François Bonhommé, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It belongs to *Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l'ancienne France*, a celebrated series that recorded historic French monuments region by region. The subject is the belfry of Amiens, in Picardy: a civic bell tower, distinct from a church tower, long associated with communal life. The exact circumstances of this impression are not stated in the source data.

The conservatorLa restauradora

As a conservator I focus on the fine hatching of this black and white lithograph from 1835 on chine collé. I notice how the contrast between the light paper close to #F2EEE6 and the deep shadows shapes the pale stone of the beffroi, with its stains and joints. The balustrade, the large round clock, the dome and the weathervane remain crisp, while the cloudy sky and the damp-looking cobblestones show delicate inking that we must protect from light to prevent fading.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As an amateur astronomer I look up first: the wide cloudy sky fills almost half the print and frames the civic tower rising like an urban observatory. I am fascinated by the small lantern topped by the spire and weathervane, designed to read the wind under that changeable sky. Lower down, the large round clock marks communal time for the cobbled square, as if the tower wanted to measure both human hours and the movement of the heavens above Amiens at once.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This tower looks like a giant castle in the middle of the square full of little stones. Down below there are ladies in long skirts and bonnets chatting, kids crouching and playing, and a horse-drawn cart next to crates and bundles. On the left there is an iron fountain with lots of curly decorations that looks like a pretty cage. I like counting the tiny little windows on the tower and seeing how at the very top there is a huge round clock and a pointy tip with a weathervane that shows where the wind blows.
