What you would seeLo que verías

Vertical black-and-white lithograph seen from a great height, as if the viewer were standing on top of a huge crane. Two dark steel girders occupy the left and right foreground and converge diagonally toward the center, forming a narrow corridor of riveted beams, cross-bracing, and deep shadows. At the top center hangs a large hook and pulley mechanism, heavy and almost threatening, suspended directly above the void. Beyond and far below lies a shipyard in full activity: the long skeleton of a ship under construction, covered with scaffolding, thin masts, poles, ladders, and smaller cranes. Tiny human figures walk along the ground and among the structures, barely larger than ants. In the lower right, a crane hook descends toward a circular platform. In the middle distance, a river reflects the pale light, with boats, more cranes, low buildings, and a flat, hazy horizon beneath a nearly white sky. The lithographic grain is rough and vibrant, with dense blacks in the foreground and finer, lighter lines in the distance, creating a strong sensation of depth, vertigo, and monumental industrial scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start at the hook hanging at the top and let your eye drop along the gap between the two girders, as if you were falling toward the shipyard. Then compare the scale of the crane in the foreground with the workers below. Finally, look for the river and the horizon: they turn an industrial scene into a vast landscape.

From my bench I notice how this 1917 lithograph by Muirhead Bone holds its vertigo. It is vertical and monochrome, with very dense blacks in the foreground and fine lines in the distance. The two diagonal beams create a corridor of rivets and cross-bracing, with deep shadows. The hanging hook adds tension. The rough lithographic grain makes the steel vibrate while letting the misty horizon over the river breathe. It belongs to Building Ships, from the series The Great War: Britain's Efforts and Ideals.

It reminds me of looking through an inverted telescope. The viewpoint is from a huge crane, high above, as if you were floating over the shipyard. Below, the ship under construction looks like an elongated constellation of scaffolds, masts and ladders. The people are tiny dots, almost ants, which reveals the monumental scale of industry during the First World War. In the distance the pale river and almost white sky open a flat horizon, like a horizontal Milky Way ordering all the chaos of cranes and structures.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

Whoa, it feels so scary to be that high! I feel like I am standing on the biggest crane in the world. Two black beams make a kind of slide that meets in the middle and everything below looks super tiny. There is a huge hook hanging like it is about to grab something. The ship looks like a dinosaur skeleton covered in scaffolds and the workers are like little ants walking around. In the back there is a light river and more cranes. My tummy tingles from how high it is!
