Francis Dodd (British, 1874–1949) · 1916 · England, 20th century
etching with drypoint
What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical print in black ink on cream paper, signed in pencil at lower right. In the center rises a church with a tall, slender steeple, seen head-on from a wide street that opens toward the viewer. The upper half is a very dark, almost black sky, worked with long diagonal lines slanting from the corners toward the tower, like heavy rain or beams of light. Against that darkness, the illuminated facade stands out in whites and grays: arched windows, columns, a curved portico, and a tall bell tower ending in a small lantern. There are scaffolds, ropes, thin poles, and a large light cover partway up the building. To either side, rows of multi-story buildings recede in perspective; those on the left receive more light, while those on the right fall into deep shadow. In the lower foreground, the pavement is drawn with loose, horizontal lines. Horse-drawn carts move through it—one at left-center loaded with sacks, another at lower right—along with small figures walking, standing in groups, pushing carts, or waiting. The contrast between the monumental, still architecture above and the busy, sketchy street life below gives the scene both solemnity and movement. White margins frame the image and heighten its nocturnal, printed texture.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First follow the street toward the bright church tower, then scan the black sky: it is not empty, but built from diagonals that press down on the city. Notice the scaffolding and covered areas on the church, and then return to the foreground, where the bustle continues as if nothing were happening.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is Strand with Sky, a print made in 1916 by Francis Dodd (1874-1949), a British artist. It is an etching with drypoint, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art in its Prints department, and was a gift of John Bonebrake. The title refers to the Strand, a busy thoroughfare in central London. The church set in the middle of the street is probably St Mary-le-Strand, although the source does not name it. Produced during the private period, the print coexists with a city still drawn by horses, trams or carriages, and pedestrians, before mass motoring transformed the street.

Curious detailDato curioso
A striking visual observation: the sky occupies more than half the image and, despite being almost black, contains diagonal rays that make the church look illuminated by a theatrical spotlight.

I focus on how this print is built in black ink on cream paper. The dark sky takes up the upper half and was worked with long diagonal lines falling toward the tower, creating a very dense graphic rain. The church facade remains in white and light gray, with arched windows and columns that contrast against that darkness. Below I see loose strokes for the pavement and the pencil signature in the lower right corner, framed by the wide paper margins.

For me it is all about the sky. It is almost black, a block weighing over the street that seems to descend in diagonal beams from the corners down to the church spire. It is not a starry sky, it is a graphic sky, of thick ink that makes the illuminated tower shine even more. That very slender vertical, with its little lantern at the top, seems to measure the night. Below the city continues, small, with lights in windows and long shadows.

The church looks like a giant in the middle of the street and all the other buildings become tiny at the sides. The sky is super black and streaked, as if it were raining hard over the pointy tower. Down below there is a lot of bustle, little horses pulling carts loaded with bundles, people walking and with wheelbarrows. Some buildings are lit up and others are very dark. I like that everything is still at the top and everyone moves below like hurried little ants.
