What you would seeLo que verías
This hand-colored lithograph presents a diagonal, low-angle view of the portico at the Temple of Edfu. On the right and in the immediate foreground, a row of massive columns dominates; their fluted shafts rise from sand that partly buries their decorated bases, and their capitals open like papyrus or lotus blossoms with intricate vegetal detailing. The stone is rendered in pale sand and warm beige tones, shaded with soft grays to suggest sun and erosion, and every surface is covered with incised hieroglyphs, processional figures, and winged sun disks along the entablature. The composition recedes toward the center, where two small figures in light robes walk across a smooth expanse of sand, emphasizing the colossal scale. Further right, a single seated figure in a turban and dark clothing rests on a fallen block between two columns. To the left, the open courtyard is enclosed by a lower colonnade with squat columns and architraves, also densely carved. The sky above is a flat, pale blue-gray, creating a calm, dusty daylight that flattens shadows and highlights the texture of weathered limestone and wind-blown sand.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the oversized capitals on the right and follow their rhythm as they recede into depth. Measure the monument against the tiny human figures in the sand to feel its scale. Finally look closely at the half-buried hieroglyphs at the column bases, evidence that the temple was still largely covered by sand when drawn.
ContextContexto
This print is from Egypt and Nubia, Volume II: Edfou, published in London in 1846 by F. G. Moon after drawings by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864) and lithographed by Louis Haghe (1806–1885). Roberts sketched extensively during his 1838–1839 tour of Egypt and Nubia, as noted by the inscription «Edfou Nov 24th 1838» at lower left. The series was one of the most influential 19th-century publications to bring ancient Egyptian architecture to a European audience. Edfu preserves the Ptolemaic Temple of Horus, among the best preserved in Egypt. The work is a color lithograph on paper, held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
David Roberts was trained as a stage designer, and his views subtly dramatize scale and light for picturesque effect, yet they remain valuable early records made before modern archaeological clearance of the site.

From my bench I first look at the light on the stone. I see the hand-colored lithograph: pale sandy and gray tones that Roberts captured in 1838 and Haghe translated in London in 1846. The columns are half-buried and their shafts covered with hieroglyphs and reliefs show erosion and loss. I focus on how the paper preserves that soft patina, the pale gray-blue sky and the light sand without stains. It is a record that preserves both the Temple of Edfu and the touch of the nineteenth century.

I look at this portico and think about orientation and scale. The diagonal view shows the row of columns on the right and in the background the perimeter wall with carved lintels, all under pale diffuse daylight that suggests midday. The three human figures — two walking and one seated with a turban — give me the true proportion of the fluted shafts and the papyrus-shaped capitals. I notice the pale sky and wonder how this courtyard would look under stars, with the winged disks on the architrave outlined against the night.

These columns are giant! They look like huge stone flowers growing out of the sand as if the desert had hidden them. I like counting the little drawings on the shafts, there are lots of lines and tiny people carved in. Sand is everywhere and three very small people walk among the columns, one is sitting with a little hat. The sky looks very pale and everything feels like an abandoned castle where you could play hide and seek. I imagine stepping on the warm sand and looking up.
