What you would seeLo que verías

A wide horizontal print in sepia and ochre tones shows the interior of an ancient Egyptian temple seen from beneath a shadowed portico. In the immediate foreground, sandy, uneven ground fills the lower third, with rocks and earth heaped up as if the site were half-excavated. On either side, two massive columns with broad floral capitals rise out of frame, their shafts carved with hieroglyphs and reliefs; between them, a lintel overhead bears a carved winged sun disk at its center. To the left and right, small figures in 19th-century Middle Eastern dress — long robes, turbans — rest, sit, stand or lean on broken stone slabs, giving a sense of scale against the monumental architecture. In the middle distance, a recessed, sunlit courtyard leads to a small central structure, and beyond it rises the great pylon of the temple, its sloped walls covered with rows of carved ancient Egyptian figures and hieroglyphs, split by a central gateway. Rows of smaller columns line the courtyard on both sides. The light is warm and dusty, the sky a pale washed blue, and fine lithographic lines render every carved detail with archaeological precision. Printed text below the image gives the title in orange capitals, with publication details and signatures in the lower corners.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start in the shadowed foreground, with the figures resting on the broken slabs, and let your gaze travel toward the luminous pylon in the back. Then look at the winged disk on the lintel above: it frames the whole temple as if you were standing inside a sacred doorway. The small detail that changes the reading is the sand burying the courtyard — this is not a temple in use, but one half-swallowed by time.

ContextContexto

Color lithograph published in London in 1847 as part of *Egypt and Nubia*, based on drawings by Scottish artist David Roberts and transferred to stone by Louis Haghe, the leading lithographer of the period. Roberts travelled through Egypt and Nubia in 1838–1839 making on-site sketches, which were then published as large hand-finished lithographs for a British audience eager for images of the ancient East. The temple depicted is that of Edfu, in Upper Egypt, one of the best preserved in the country and dedicated to the god Horus. At the time of Roberts's visit it was still partly buried in sand and debris, as the print shows. We do not know exactly how faithfully the figures were recorded or added in the studio; it is likely that some were arranged to enliven the scene.

Curious detailDato curioso

The Temple of Edfu is considered one of the best-preserved temples of ancient Egypt: it was buried under sand and silt for centuries, which paradoxically protected its walls and reliefs until its excavation in the 19th century.

The conservatorLa restauradora

From my craft I focus on how this lithograph tries to preserve what David Roberts saw in 1838 and 1839. I notice the sepia and ochre tones, the pale blue sky and the precise lines copying every hieroglyph on the shaft. I see the sandy ground with stones and rubble and understand the temple of Edfu was still half-buried. I am interested in Louis Haghe's work transferring the drawing to stone and the hand-coloring that creates that warm, dusty light.

I look upward even though I am under the shaded portico. On the lintel I spot the winged sun disk carved in the center, a symbol linking sun and protection. I imagine light entering the sunken courtyard and brightening the pylon in the distance. I think about how Egyptians aligned temples to the sun and how Roberts, traveling between 1838 and 1839, captured that desert brightness with a wide horizontal print and warm tones for the British public of 1847.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This temple is huge! The columns are enormous with little flower hats on top and they are covered with funny little drawings that are hieroglyphs. I like finding the tiny people with turbans and long robes sitting on broken stones, they look so small next to everything. Far away there is a big doorway between two slanted walls with lots of little figures. And everything is full of sand like a giant sandbox half dug out. Can you imagine playing there?
