What you would seeLo que verías
A softly coloured lithograph sits at the centre of a wide sheet of cream paper, surrounded by a generous pale margin. Below the image, outside the scene itself, capital letters read: “THE TEMPLES OF ABOO-SIMBEL, FROM THE NILE”. The view opens onto a broad, luminous riverbank. In the foreground, the calm water of the Nile fills the lower strip; a small boat with a light triangular sail and a dark hull crosses it, carrying tiny figures, one oar touching the water. Its reflection is barely suggested on the surface. At the centre and in the background rises an immense rocky mass with horizontally layered slopes. On the left, half-buried in sand, four seated colossi of the Great Temple can be made out, their headdresses and faces only lightly shaded; a standing figure appears in a niche between them. A large tongue of pale sand falls diagonally from the façade to the shore, and a minute line of people walks down it, giving a sense of the monument's overwhelming scale. On the right, cropped by another slope, a second temple is partly visible, with standing figures in rectangular niches. The light is diffuse, with almost no hard shadows, in washed beiges, warm greys and faint ochres. Fine parallel hatching textures the rock, while sky and sand are left nearly white.
Abajo, fuera de la escena, se lee en letras capitales: “THE TEMPLES OF ABOO-SIMBEL, FROM THE NILE”.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First look at the small boat on the Nile, then let your eye climb the pale tongue of sand toward the colossi: that path reveals the true scale of the rock. Next, compare the two temples, one emerging on the left and the other only partly visible on the right. Finally, notice how much is left almost blank — sky, sand and water — and how that emptiness makes the monument feel remote.
ContextContexto
According to the source data, this 1848 colour lithograph belongs to *Egypt and Nubia, Volume II* and is captioned on the sheet *The Temples of Aboo-Simbel, from the Nile*. It was made by lithographer Louis Haghe after a work by David Roberts and published in London by F. G. Moon, at 20 Threadneedle Street. It is now held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, as a bequest of John Bonebrake. It shows the rock-cut temples of Abu Simbel, in Nubia, seen from the Nile, with sand still covering part of the façades. Roberts travelled through Egypt and Nubia in the late 1830s, and his drawings became the basis for these prints made for a British audience.
The Temples of Aboo-Simbel, from the Nile*.

Curious detailDato curioso
The temples of Abu Simbel were later dismantled and rebuilt on higher ground in the 1960s, in the UNESCO rescue campaign prompted by the construction of the Aswan High Dam, so the shoreline and setting recorded here no longer look the same.

I focus on the cream paper and the wide margin that protects the lithograph, with those very washed beiges and ochres that barely tint the sandy tone. I notice the fine parallel hatching that textures the stratified rock and how color is held back for sky and water, leaving the desert light almost blank. I am interested in how the print keeps its color stable even though it is from 1848, and how the title in capitals below the image works as a visual anchor without intruding on the Nile scene.

I look at this wide view of the Nile and think about the diffuse light, with no hard shadows, that suggests a high veiled sun over Nubia. Scale fascinates me: the tiny figures on the pale sand slope and on the triangular sail boat give us the true measure of the four half-buried seated colossi. I imagine Roberts observing from the water, estimating proportions of the cliff and the facade so the British viewer could feel the immensity of the rock-cut temple.

The giants are sitting and sand covers their feet! They look like four sleepy guardians in the mountain and there is a pale sandy slope where tiny people climb like ants. On the water I see a little boat with a white sail that looks like a toy and its oar touches the Nile. Everything is sandy color, cream and soft gray, like a drawing made with very light colored pencils. I want to count the giants one by one.
