What you would seeLo que verías

This is a horizontal lithograph printed on a broad sheet of cream paper, with generous margins and, beneath the image, the printed title in capitals: Temple of A'mada at Hassaia, Nubia. Almost half the scene is occupied by the still water of a wide river in the foreground, rendered with fine horizontal lines, soft reflections and patches of shadow. Slightly right of centre floats a boat with two tall, dark triangular sails and a low hull; a few tiny figures can be made out on deck. To its left, a single person crosses in a small canoe, while on the far left several very small birds or human figures wade at the water's edge. The opposite bank rises gently: a band of grey-green bushes and leafy trees gives way to a pale, almost bare sandy slope. On the crest, small and bright against the sky, stands a light-coloured building with flat walls, rectangular openings and a central arched, domed section, identified as the temple. Behind it to the right, grey, craggy mountains recede under a cloudy sky of beige, grey and off-white tones. Faint hand-written inscriptions appear in the lower corners of the image. The contrasts are delicate, the textures soft, and the overall effect quiet, luminous and distant.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the river from the foreground toward the dark-sailed boat, then let your eye climb the pale slope to the temple. Notice how the temple is actually small: its importance comes from its high, isolated placement. Finally, look for the tiny figures and birds on the left, which set the scale of the landscape.

ContextContexto

According to information provided by the Cleveland Museum of Art, this is a color lithograph published in London in 1847 in Egypt and Nubia, Volume II, with the title Temple of Amdda, of Hassaya in Nubia. The image was made by the Belgian-born British lithographer Louis Haghe (1806–1885) after work by the Scottish artist David Roberts (1796–1864), and published by F. G. Moon. Roberts is known for his travels through Egypt and the Near East in 1838–1839 and for the drawings he made on site, later turned into widely circulated prints in Britain. Precise details of this particular view are not recorded in the source information.

The conservatorLa restauradora

I focus on the cream paper and its generous margins, the support that holds the image without competing with it. I notice the fine horizontal lines of the water and how Louis Haghe translated David Roberts drawing into an 1847 color lithograph printed in London by F. G. Moon. The beige, grey and grey-green tones are soft, almost veiled, and the title in capitals beneath the scene anchors everything. I wonder about the stability of those pigments and about the handwritten inscriptions in the lower corners, barely legible.

I look at the cloudy sky in beige and broken greys, with no direct sun yet luminous, and I think of desert light at dusk. The temple appears small and pale atop the light slope, like a landmark for those navigating the river. The two dark triangular sails of the boat cut against the horizon, and the water reflects the sky in soft patches. It is a scene of distance and stillness, where the human scale is tiny against the vast Nubian landscape and its jagged mountains.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I like the big river that takes up almost half of the picture, it looks like you could dip your feet in it. There is a little boat with two big dark sails that looks like a pirate ship, and next to it a tiny canoe with just one person. On the other side there are little green trees and up top, super tiny, a light-colored temple with arches and a little dome on top. Behind there are grey mountains and the sky is cloudy. Everything looks calm, like there is no noise and only little boats passing slowly.
