What you would seeLo que verías
A horizontal lithograph in soft sepia, beige and grey tones on cream paper, set within wide white margins. At the centre right, on a sandy rise, stands the temple: two large trapezoidal pylons with plain walls flank a dark entrance, and to the right a low colonnade stretches away toward a bright hill. From the temple, an avenue descends diagonally to the left, lined with small, weathered sphinxes lying low and half-buried in the sand. In the left foreground, two tall, eroded standing statues mark the start of that processional way. On the right in the foreground, a group of six men in robes and turbans gathers beside a block of stone; one points toward the temple, another sits, and the rest look on, giving human scale to the landscape. To the left opens a flat stretch suggesting the river, with hills and a pointed mountain in the distance beneath a broad sky filled with finely drawn clouds. The light is diffuse and warm, with no harsh shadows, and the texture combines the grain of the paper with delicate linework. Along the bottom, the title and signatures are printed in small, faint lettering.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the group of men on the right, whose gesture points toward the temple and guides your eye across the scene. Then follow the diagonal line of sphinxes from the foreground toward the pylons. Finally, notice how tiny the figures by the temple are; that contrast makes the landscape feel vast and almost empty.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this 1847 color lithograph belongs to Egypt and Nubia, Volume I, published in London by F. G. Moon. It was made by Louis Haghe after a work by David Roberts, the Scottish artist known for his travel views. Roberts travelled through Egypt and Nubia in the late 1830s, and his drawings were transferred to lithography for a European audience fascinated by archaeology and distant landscapes. The building shown is the temple of Wady Saboua, in Nubia, south of Egypt. The source does not provide the original dimensions of this impression, nor the whereabouts of the specific preparatory drawings for this plate.

I linger on how the cream paper breathes under those soft sepia and beige tones. You can see the grain and the delicate linework of the color lithograph, with the smooth pylons and the low colonnade set against the bright hill. I am drawn to the half-buried sphinxes and the two eroded statues in the foreground: sand slowly covers them and the wear itself is part of the story. Below, the faint title and signatures also need care, because they are the trace of the 1847 printing.

I look at this landscape and think about desert light. The broad sky with finely drawn clouds gives a soft, warm illumination without harsh shadows, which helps imagine how the temple looked at dawn or dusk. In the distance, the flat strip that suggests the river and the pointed mountain work as reference points, almost like natural markers to find your way. I like to picture someone using the horizon and the avenue of sphinxes to track the sun's path there.

It looks like a trail made for playing explorer. The little sphinxes are lying in the sand as if they fell asleep and two tall statues welcome you at the start, all scratched up by time. The temple on top has two huge walls like giant doors and a row of columns that goes far away. I like the six men in turbans chatting on a stone, one is pointing as if saying look at that! and they make you feel how big the place is.
