What you would seeLo que verías
A softly tinted lithograph in sepia and warm gray showing the deep interior hall of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel as a long, symmetrical corridor in one-point perspective. In the foreground, on both sides, stand colossal Osiride statues attached to pillars, wearing the White Crown of Upper Egypt, false beards, arms crossed over the chest holding crook and flail, and finely pleated kilts with patterned belts; their stone surfaces are chipped, pitted and cracked, and their feet are half-buried in pale sand. The surrounding pillars and walls are covered with rows of hieroglyphs and low reliefs, lightly sketched. The low ceiling is divided into decorated bands with winged motifs. At the far end the hall darkens into a rectangular doorway that reveals a smaller inner chamber with two standing figures barely visible. Near the center, tiny in comparison to the giants, are four 19th-century visitors and a guide walking on the sandy floor, providing a strong sense of scale. Diffuse light from the entrance models the volumes with gentle shadows, creating a quiet, awe-filled atmosphere of ancient grandeur and archaeological discovery.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Take in the whole corridor first and see how the repeating colossi guide your eye toward the dark doorway at the back. Then measure the tiny central visitors against the statues to grasp the monumental scale. Finally linger on the textures of chipped stone, drifted sand and faint hieroglyphs that speak of centuries of burial and exposure.
ContextContexto
This print comes from Egypt and Nubia, Volume I, published in London in 1846 after drawings by Scottish artist David Roberts (1796-1864), lithographed by Louis Haghe (1806-1885) and published by F. G. Moon. It depicts the interior of the Great Temple of Abu Simbel, a rock-cut temple built in the 13th century BCE under Ramesses II and dedicated to Amun, Ra-Horakhty and Ptah as well as the pharaoh himself. Roberts toured Egypt and Nubia in 1838-1839, and his views were widely circulated in Victorian Britain, fueling public interest in Egyptology. The technique is color lithograph on paper. No further details are given in the source record from the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso
Although the print shows the temple half-filled with sand, the entire Abu Simbel complex was cut into blocks and moved 65 meters uphill in the 1960s to save it from flooding by the Aswan High Dam during a UNESCO-led rescue campaign.

I focus on the material of this hand-colored lithograph from 1846, after David Roberts and lithographed by Louis Haghe. I notice the sepia and grey tones, #D8CAB3 and #A99B85, that shape the corridor with soft shadows. The Osiride statues show erosion, flaking and cracks, pleated kilts and bases half-buried in pale sand. Walls and pillars hint at hieroglyphs and the ceiling shows decorative bands. It is a record of a picturesque travel and of fragile preservation.

I see a monumental corridor in central perspective that works like a telescope into darkness. Diffuse light enters from outside, bounces off the pale sandy floor and fades toward the rectangular doorway at the back, where another chamber with two figures can be glimpsed. The low ceiling with winged motifs frames that vanishing point. The four tiny visitors and their guide provide scale, like reference points to measure the colossal size and depth of the rock-cut space.

They are sleeping giants! The statues are huge, with their tall little crowns, fake beards and arms crossed hugging their crook and flail, as if playing at being kings forever. They are a bit chipped and their feet are in the sand. At the back there is a tiny door that looks like a toy. And in the middle walk super tiny people with hats, they look like little ants next to the giants! I want to count their steps.
