What you would seeLo que verías

A wide horizontal six-panel folding screen, divided by five vertical seams and framed by a dark green patterned border. The scene unfolds like an aerial map of a rural village in pale beige, gold, and washed gray tones. On the right, a calm river or lake occupies the middle ground: a small flat boat carries several figures, a low curved bridge crosses the lower edge, and pine-covered islets rise from the water. In the center stand thatched-roof farmhouses with brown, fibrous roofs, open walls, and dirt yards where dozens of tiny figures work, carry bundles, lead animals, talk, or prepare food. Large trees with dark green canopies shade the houses. To the left, larger buildings with sliding panels and tiled or thatched roofs suggest a wealthier residence, with horses and more figures moving along paths. In the foreground are rooftops, bushes, and small red-orange autumn trees. In the background, misty mountains fade beneath bands of gold cloud that drift across the upper panels. The brushwork is fine and light; figures are only a few centimeters tall, rendered with quick strokes of white, blue-gray, brown, and black. Small birds cross the sky on the upper right, and a vertical signature appears on the far left.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start on the right, where the water and the small boat open up the space, and move leftward as if walking toward the village. Then slow down in the center and look for tiny figures who are not working: eating, talking, or resting. Notice how the gold mist hides the transitions between fields, river, and mountains, so the seasons seem to blend together.

ContextContexto

This is the autumn screen of Spring and Autumn Farming, a six-panel folding screen by Japanese artist Kō Sūkoku (1730–1804), made in the 1700s during the Edo period (1615–1868). According to the Cleveland Museum of Art, the pair presented the cycle of the farming year, beginning with spring on the right and ending with autumn on the left. Kō was considered an heir to Hanabusa Itchō (1652–1724) and trained with Itchō’s pupil Sawaki Sūshi, known for scenes of everyday life. It is not known for whom this specific screen was made, but it portrays rural life as orderly and communal.

Curious detailDato curioso

Japanese folding screens, or byōbu, were not only paintings: they also served as movable partitions to divide rooms, block drafts, and create more private spaces indoors.

If you get closer, you will see this folding screen is very wide and divided into six panels with five vertical seams. I notice how the dark green border frames a delicate scene in beige, gold and faded gray. The thatched roof houses in brown are painted with fine brushstrokes and the tiny figures are only a few centimeters tall, made with touches of white and bluish gray. The gold in the clouds and the soft wear tell us about its age from the eighteenth century and the work to preserve it.

I like to imagine this folding screen as a map of time seen from above. The band of golden cloud crossing the upper part feels like the sky marking the season, and here it is autumn with small reddish orange trees in the foreground. In the background the mountains fade into mist, as if the horizon opened into infinity. The tiny birds at the top right remind me how people in the past used flight patterns and stars to guide farming life through the year.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a giant toy village! It has six parts folded like an accordion and so much is happening inside. I see a river with a tiny flat boat carrying people, a little curved bridge and straw roof houses where lots of tiny figures carry bundles, guide animals and make food. On the left there are horses and bigger houses. I love the dark green trees that give shade and the orange autumn trees that look like candy.
