What you would seeLo que verías

The vertical image is dominated by very dark, reddish, almost black browns. At center-right, a nude woman kneels in profile, looking to the left and slightly downward. Her body, rendered in a lighter, warmer brown, stands out against a large undulating cloth that fills nearly the entire background and spreads behind her like a wave. Her hair is pulled into a low bun, her nose and chin are only faintly outlined, one breast is visible, and her arms are bent in front of her torso with her hands brought together, as if she were holding or contemplating something small that cannot be made out. A dark shadow runs down her back, one side, and part of her legs, dividing the figure between warm light and gloom. The cloth has deep folds, diagonal etched lines, and brighter coppery passages; its rough texture, produced by aquatint, contrasts with the smoother, more even skin. A dark monogram appears at lower left. There is no furniture, no detailed facial expression, and no explicit light source: the glow suggested by the title seems to emanate from the color itself. The irregular edge of the printed area reveals a pale strip of paper around it.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the woman's pale silhouette against the darkness, then follow the sweeping drapery behind her as if it were a wave or a flame. Notice her joined hands and downcast gaze: the small, indistinct center of her attention changes the scene from a simple nude study into a moment of private contemplation.

ContextContexto

Embers Glow is a color print by French artist Theodore Roussel (1847–1926), dated 1890–1897 and held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, which received it as a gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. It was made with color etching and aquatint, intaglio techniques that combine incised line with broad, textured areas of tone. Roussel spent much of his career in England and is known for etchings influenced by James McNeill Whistler. The source does not identify the model or the exact place of production, so those details are not known; the glow of the title is probably suggested by color and mood rather than depicted literally.

The Print Club of Cleveland.

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the title, there are no visible flames, fireplace, or embers in the image: the fire exists only in the coppery reds and warm browns of the ink.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Where do you imagine the light that warms the figure is coming from, if no source is shown?¿De dónde imaginas que viene la luz que calienta la figura, si no se muestra ninguna fuente?
  2. Does the large cloth behind her feel protective, theatrical, or threatening?¿La gran tela que está detrás de ella te parece protectora, teatral o amenazante?
  3. How would the mood change if the same scene were printed only in black and white?¿Cómo cambiaría el ambiente si la misma escena estuviera impresa solo en blanco y negro?

What holds me here is how color does the work of light without showing it. This color etching and aquatint from 1890 to 1897 reveals two very different textures: the smoother, more even skin against the rough, grainy fabric behind it, achieved with aquatint resin. The very dark browns, reddish and copper tones create that warm glow suggested by the title without drawing embers. Down on the left, that dark monogram and the irregular plate edge remind us we are looking at a carefully made intaglio print.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this vertical print like an inner night sky. Everything is dense dusk in almost black and deep brown tones, and in the center-right a pale figure emerges like a warm moon kneeling in profile. The large wavy drapery behind looks like a nebula with diagonal folds and coppery glints. Its shadow splits the body into day and night. There is no lamp or painted fire, the glow comes from the color itself, like the heat that remains after embers fade and keeps shining in the dark.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like she is playing hide and seek in a giant chocolate-colored blanket. She is kneeling sideways, with her hair tied in a little bun and her hands together as if she were holding a tiny invisible spark. The blanket behind her is huge, with lots of little wrinkles and it looks like a wave about to hug her. Her skin glows warm compared to everything dark around. Down below you can see a little dark mark made by the artist. You cannot see where the light comes from, but the whole picture feels like staying close to something cozy and warm.

  1. #1

If you look at the bottom left, what dark artist mark can you spot on the light paper?

    HintPista

It is small and dark, not a long signature, it is intertwined letters.

  2. #2

On which side of the image is the woman kneeling and which way is she looking?

    HintPista

Find the pale figure against the dark background, her nose and chin point to the opposite side from her back.

  3. #3

What large element fills almost the whole background behind the figure and is full of coppery folds?

    HintPista

It is not furniture or a smooth wall, it is something soft and wrinkled that looks like a wave.
