What you would seeLo que verías

The piece is the nearly square cover of a cloth portfolio, photographed straight on against a plain gray background. The surface is a warm off-white, slightly aged, with the fine woven texture of fabric visible throughout and soft shadows along the bound left edge and lower margin. At the top, in large, bold black serif letters, reads “London Types.” Below it, in smaller red type, are the words “By / William Nicholson,” centered and widely spaced. The lower half is dominated by a spare black-line figure seen from a slight angle, seated and cropped so that his body fades into the blank cloth. He wears a dark bowler hat, has a round face in profile with a small red mouth, and looks off to the right with a self-assured expression. His pale torso is indicated by only a few buttons and curved contours; no coat color is filled in. One hand grips reins or a whip handle that descends diagonally and cuts off at the bottom. Two short, curved red strokes behind and across his body suggest a seat or vehicle. The composition leaves abundant empty space, giving the cover a clean, poster-like clarity despite its small scale.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the three lines of text and notice how black and red take turns guiding your eye downward. Then look at the driver: his body is barely drawn, yet his hat, hand, and posture make him instantly recognizable. The red curve behind him changes everything, suggesting a seat and a sense of movement where there is almost no setting.

ContextContexto

According to the source, this is the original cloth cover of London Types, a portfolio published in 1898 by British artist William Nicholson (1872–1949), now in the Cleveland Museum of Art as a gift of The Print Club of Cleveland. Nicholson became known in the 1890s for bold woodcuts with simplified forms and flat color. London Types presented a gallery of characteristic London figures; the full series is generally known as a set of twelve images accompanied by verses by W. E. Henley. The exact printing history of this particular copy is not stated in the source.

The Print Club of Cleveland.

Curious detailDato curioso

With only black, red, and the cream color of the cloth, Nicholson creates a complete character: the red is not used for clothing or realistic detail, but as a graphic accent that suggests the cabman's seat and gives balance to the author's name above.

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause on this warm white cloth, slightly aged, where the fine weave of the fabric is still visible. I am interested in how the intense black and the orangey red sit on the surface without saturating it, leaving a lot of empty space that also needs preserving. The figure of the man in a bowler hat is solved with an economical black line, just a few buttons and those two curved red strokes that hint at a seat. The spine on the left and the soft shadow below remind us this is a three-dimensional cover, not a flat print.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I see this cover as a small inverted night sky. The creamy background is like a pale firmament and the black lettering for London Types at the top is a set of fixed constellations giving a title to the whole. The silhouette of the coachman in a bowler hat, cut off and synthetic, looks to me like a constellation made of few stars joined by black lines, with that little red mouth as a bright point. The two red arcs behind suggest orbits. I love that huge emptiness, like the space between stars, which gives a poster-like clarity to a minimal urban scene.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

This gentleman makes me giggle because you only see his round head in profile and his bowler hat firmly on, as if he were playing hide and seek on the white cloth. He has a tiny red mouth and looks very confidently to one side while holding something that looks like reins going off the drawing. I like the two little red lines that look like the back of his invisible cart. At the top it says London Types in big black letters and below the artist's name in red. There is so much empty space left for me to draw too!
