What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical print in grays, blacks, and warm beige, with a nearly empty pale sky taking up much of the upper space. On the left, cropped by the edge, rises a Gothic church in light stone: a partly visible circular rose window, pointed arches, pinnacles, buttresses, and a finely drawn balustrade. At center, its tall, sharp spire dominates the composition and pulls the eye upward. Balancing it on the right is a multi-story city building with rectangular windows, curtains, a balcony, and, midway up, a sign reading “CAFÉ DE L’EUROPE.” Dark awnings shade its entrance below. The foreground street is full of life: on the left, market stalls with slanted awnings hold baskets, bundles, and piles of goods, while a crowd of women in long skirts and caps, men in hats, and children talk, shop, and carry parcels. At center, horses harnessed to a carriage wait among the people. The light is diffuse, as on an overcast day, and the drawing pairs precise architectural lines with softer shading in clothing and shadow. At lower right, two small dogs play beside fallen poles; at lower left, a handwritten inscription gives the title and date.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the tall spire at the center, then let your eye drop to the crowded market at its base. Next, compare the church on the left with the café building on the right. The small dogs, fallen poles, and handwritten inscription along the bottom reward a final, slower look.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is a lithograph with tint stone by British artist James Duffield Harding (1798–1863), dated October 1832 and titled *Sketches at Home and Abroad: Lyons Church of St. Hezier*. It comes from the Cleveland Museum of Art, through the Bequest of John Bonebrake. Harding was known for topographical drawings and prints made during his travels. The title places the scene in Lyon, France, beside the church named in the inscription; the exact modern spelling of that church's name is not confirmed in the source data. The tint stone gives the print its soft, warm background tone.

Curious detailDato curioso
On the building at right, the sign reads “CAFÉ DE L’EUROPE” — a small, legible detail that instantly places this British artist's view in everyday French city life, not just in front of a monument.

I focus on the technique, this lithograph with tint stone. Notice how two gestures coexist: the architecture is drawn with a precise and patient line, rose window, arches, pinnacles and balustrade clearly defined, while the crowd and shadows are soft, velvety washes. The warm beige background from the stone lets the almost empty sky breathe and makes the grays and blacks vibrate. Below you can read the handwritten inscription with title and date, a light stroke that does not compete with the scene.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
What catches me is the verticality. The church spire is like an inverted telescope pointing at the sky, and the artist left that sky as a broad, diffuse beige, like a cloudy day with no stars. On the left the light stone of the church contrasts with the dark awnings of the market. I like that tension between the permanent, the gothic stone trying to touch the sky, and the ephemeral below, the crowd, the horses and the carriage that could leave at any moment.

I looked for the little dogs first! They are down on the right, tiny, playing next to some fallen sticks. Then I saw the market with lots of stalls, baskets and bundles, and many ladies with long skirts and bonnets. There are horses waiting with their carriage among the people. Up top is the huge church with a round window like a donut and a peak that goes up to the sky. I like to imagine the puppies barking and nobody hears them because of the noise.

Down in the foreground on the street, how many little dogs are playing together next to some sticks?
HintPista
Look at the lower right corner, near the edge and the shadows of the crowd.
#3
On the church on the left, close to the edge, what shape is the high window that is partially cropped?
HintPista
It is a large gothic window, round, with radial tracery, typical of that architecture.
