What you would seeLo que verías

A vertical lithograph in black ink on cream-colored paper shows a narrow cobblestone street flanked by old buildings. On the right, occupying much of the foreground, rises an ornate stone facade with a large pointed arch, small columns, capitals, reliefs and carved details rendered with dense, fine lines. Beneath it are wooden doors, a small tiled roof, shuttered windows and several figures in 19th-century dress: women with baskets, seated people and a man by a doorway. The uneven cobblestones lead toward the background, where a building with a stepped decorative gable closes the street. It has rows of windows, a frieze and a central arched passage through which another street and tiny figures can be glimpsed. On the left, only the edge of another building is visible, with shutters and a wrought-iron bracket extending over the street, its curled ends silhouetted against a nearly blank, pale sky. Light is even and graphic rather than dramatic; texture comes from hatching on stone, roof tiles and paving. At the bottom, handwritten lettering reads “Thein Church Prague.” The scene feels quiet, despite the scattered groups of people.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the cobblestones toward the distant archway, then return to the ornate facade on the right. Notice how the supposed main subject occupies only part of the image. Finally, look for the small figures and baskets that give scale to the stonework.

ContextContexto

Curious detailDato curioso

Despite the title, the church does not appear in full: the street, the neighboring houses and everyday activity occupy as much attention as the Gothic facade.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Why might the artist give so much space to the street instead of showing the whole church?¿Por qué el artista le da tanto espacio a la calle en lugar de mostrar la iglesia completa?

Three guides, three ways of lookingTres guías, tres miradas

The conservatorLa restauradora

I pause before the cream-colored paper and black ink of this 1833 lithograph. With a conservator’s eye I notice the fine hatching that builds the stonework, roof tiles and cobblestones, and how the even, graphic light avoids dramatic contrasts. I am drawn to the handwritten inscription below that reads Thein Church Prague and to the pale, almost empty sky, which speaks to us about age and about preserving a print that aims to look like a travel sketch.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

I look at the pale, almost empty sky in the print and think about how little it tells us about the time of day. There are no strong shadows or dramatic contrasts, only an even light that clearly reveals the cobbled street, the highly ornamented facade on the right and the building with the stepped gable in the distance. As an amateur astronomer I wonder about that graphic atmosphere, with no clouds or stars, which directs all attention toward the Gothic architecture and the tiny figures carrying baskets.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

It looks like a storybook street made only with little black lines on light paper. I like to follow the cobblestones with my finger all the way to the back, where there is a big arch with very tiny people walking through. On the right there is a church with lots of little decorations, pointy shapes and wooden doors, and down below there are women with baskets and people sitting. Up above the sky is almost white and on the left there is a curly iron thing hanging over the street like a swing.

  1. #1

If you follow the cobblestones to the end of the street, what shape closes the view and lets the tiny figures pass through?

    HintPista

Look at the building with the stepped gable right in the center in the background.

  2. #2

At the bottom of the image there is handwriting, what church name and city can you read there?

    HintPista

Look below, outside the architectural drawing, where the ink looks handwritten.

  3. #3

What color is the paper on which the black ink of the lithograph is printed?

    HintPista

It is not pure white, it is the warm tone you see in the sky and margins.
