What you would seeLo que verías

A tall, narrow color lithograph shows a single man in full length, standing in strict profile and facing right against a pale beige, almost empty ground. He occupies the center of the page, elongated and slightly stiff. He wears a glossy black top hat with a flat crown, a dark gray tailcoat, a high white collar, a dark dotted necktie or cravat, light gray-brown trousers, and polished black shoes with bright highlights. His right hand, hanging close to his body, holds a very thin cane that reaches diagonally to the ground; his left hand is clenched at waist height. His head is emphasized by caricature: a long prominent nose, a projecting chin, a downturned mouth, a heavy brow, and reddish-brown curly hair with thick sideburns and a short beard. Beneath his feet, loose gray hatching suggests a path and vague shrubbery, giving him a soft shadow but no real setting. At the upper left floats a small red-and-gold coronet. Printed text frames the image: “VANITY FAIR. July 31, 1869.” at the top, and below, “No. 39.”, “STATESMEN, No. 26.” and the quotation “When Birth cannot lead, Brains must.” A stylized signature appears in the lower-left shading.

July 31, 1869.”; abajo, “No. 39.”, “STATESMEN, No. 26.” y la cita “When Birth cannot lead, Brains must.”

How to look at itCómo mirarla

Start with the silhouette: the top hat and tailcoat place him instantly in respectable public life. Then move to the face, where the caricature concentrates all of its bite. Finally, compare the small coronet at the upper left with the quotation at the bottom; together, they frame the tension between inherited rank and intelligence.

ContextContexto

Published in the British magazine Vanity Fair on July 31, 1869, this color lithograph is Statesmen No. 26, captioned “When Birth cannot lead, Brains must.” It was drawn by Carlo Pellegrini (1839–1889), the Italian artist who signed his Vanity Fair work “Ape.” The magazine became famous for full-page caricatures of politicians and public figures, combining likeness, social commentary, and gentle—or not so gentle—mockery. The source information does not name the sitter, so his identity should not be assumed from his clothing or from the small coronet printed above him. The work is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Curious detailDato curioso

Pellegrini was Vanity Fair’s first caricaturist, and his signature “Ape” also played on the English word for a primate—an apt joke for an artist whose job was to imitate, and slightly distort, famous faces.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Does the caricature make this man seem powerful, ridiculous, or both at once?¿La caricatura hace que este hombre parezca poderoso, ridículo o ambas cosas a la vez?

This color lithograph from Vanity Fair, dated July 31, 1869, makes me look first at the pale beige background and the almost empty paper that puts all the weight on the central figure. I study the shiny black top hat, the dark gray frock coat with tails, the light gray trousers and the polished black shoes. I linger on the very thin cane held diagonally and the loose gray hatching under the feet suggesting a path. It is number 26 in the Statesmen series, drawn by Carlo Pellegrini signing as Ape, preserved in that sober palette.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

As if watching a transit, I see this man in strict profile facing right, cut out against a cream-colored void like a sky with no stars. His elongated, stiff silhouette recalls a planet moving steadily across a bright field. At the upper left a small red and gold coronet floats like a satellite. Below I read Vanity Fair, No. 39, Statesmen No. 26 and the motto When Birth cannot lead, Brains must. The exaggerated long nose and protruding chin tell me this is not just portraiture, it is Victorian satire.

Abajo leo Vanity Fair, No. 39, Statesmen No. 26 y el lema When Birth cannot lead, Brains must.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

His super long nose and pointy chin make me giggle, it looks drawn on purpose to tease. He stands sideways, very straight, with a shiny black top hat like a tall cake, a long dark gray coat, light pants and shiny black shoes. In one hand he holds a super skinny little cane and the other hand is a little fist at his waist. Up above there is a small red and gold crown floating. Everything is on a light beige background and below there are letters that say Vanity Fair and something about brains.
