What you would seeLo que verías
At the center of a tall, cream-colored sheet sits a heavyset, bearded man, shown from slightly below the knees up, seated astride a wooden chair turned backward. His torso faces forward while his head turns sharply to his left, eyes looking sideways with raised brows and a tightly closed mouth, giving him an alert, slightly suspicious expression. A full, long beard and moustache, pale blond going gray, spread over his chest; wavy hair of the same color is brushed back from a broad forehead. His left hand rests against his cheek and ear, the right hand grips the opposite forearm, and both arms fold over the chair's high brown back. He wears a very dark brown-black frock coat with white cuffs just showing, and loose, light gray-brown trousers whose soft folds gather at the knees. The chair is pale wood with a dark upholstered panel and a horizontal stretcher between the legs. The background is an almost empty pale sage ground with faint shading near the floor. Small printed lettering reads "VANITY FAIR" at upper left, "Feb.y 1 1879" at upper right, the lithographer's credit at lower left, and "Emotional Music" centered below the image.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
Start with the sidelong glance, which turns an otherwise quiet pose into a small performance. Then move down to the chair back he leans on like a lectern, and finally notice the small "T" between its rungs, the artist's signature hiding in the furniture.
ContextContexto
This color lithograph was published in the British magazine *Vanity Fair* on February 1, 1879, under the caption "Emotional Music." The source data names the French artist Théobald Chartran and the printing firm Vincent Brooks, Day & Son, and dates the print to 1879. The sitter is not named in the museum metadata shown here; he is probably the composer Johannes Brahms, whose long beard and association with serious, emotional music match the title and period, though that identification should be treated as probable rather than documented here. *Vanity Fair* was known for full-page caricature portraits of public figures, drawn with recognizable features but softened by polite exaggeration.

Curious detailDato curioso
Chartran signs the work twice without long signatures: a small printed credit at the lower left and a modest capital "T" tucked on the floor between the chair rungs.

I focus on the material of this 1879 colour lithograph printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son for Vanity Fair. The cream paper lets the figure breathe, while the almost empty pale sage background draws attention to the dark frock coat and the brown upholstery of the chair. I notice the soft folds of the light grey trousers and the contrast between the pale wood and the dense ink. At the top we read VANITY FAIR and the date Feb.y 1 1879, below the printer’s credit and the centred title Emotional Music.
The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado
What captivates me is this posture of waiting, like someone watching a celestial transit. Straddling a chair turned backwards, with arms crossed over its tall backrest, the man turns his head sharply to his left and glances sideways with raised eyebrows and a closed mouth. That wary attentiveness seems to listen to something outside the frame. The empty, luminous background recalls a twilight sky, a void that intensifies the expression. The title Emotional Music suggests that the invisible, sound itself, occupies the centre.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años
It makes me laugh how he is sitting, backwards on the chair! like he is playing horsey. He has a huge blond beard with grey that covers almost his whole chest and his hair combed back. He rests one hand on his cheek and with the other holds his arm, glancing sideways as if someone just told him gossip. His coat is almost black and his grey trousers wrinkle at the knees. The background is empty and you only see the wooden chair with its dark part.
