What you would seeLo que verías

A horizontal print in sepia, black and cream tones, enclosed by a thin dark border, with the title “L'ARIVÉE DE LA COURSE” printed below. Across a pale dirt path scattered with small stones and low tufts of grass, three horses move in profile from left to right. At the left, a lean bay horse walks with its neck stretched forward, led by a man in a top hat while its light-clad rider holds the reins loosely and looks back. At the far left, two onlookers observe; one carries a light cloth and a bundle of straw over his shoulder. In the center, a man seen from behind, also in a top hat and dark coat, stands between horses and faces three mounted riders who appear to be conversing. Their pale horse partly overlaps another, darker animal. On the right, beside a tall wooden post marking the ground, a dark horse rears and paws the air; its rider raises his black hat with one hand and pulls the reins with the other. The sky is almost empty, the light is even, and fine hatching models muscles, coats, boots, manes and tails. In the distant background, a tiny horseman crosses the plain.

How to look at itCómo mirarla

First follow the three horses from left to right and compare their gaits and the calmness or tension of their riders. Then look at the hands: reins, a whip, a bundle of straw and a hat raised in greeting. In the background, between the horses' legs, a tiny rider reveals that the open landscape is larger than it first appears.

ContextContexto

The Cleveland Museum of Art identifies this work as Racing Scenes: A Horse Arriving at the Race, also cited with the French title Scènes Hippiques: Cheval arrivant de la chasse, while the inscription on the print reads “L'ARIVÉE DE LA COURSE.” It is a French lithograph associated with Carle Vernet (1758–1836), Jazet and Aumont, dated broadly to c. 1780–1836. Vernet was known for equestrian, hunting, military and everyday scenes. The exact place and date of this race, and whether it depicts a specific event, are not known. The image probably shows the moments just before a competition rather than the race itself. Credit: Bequest of John Bonebrake.

Curious detailDato curioso

A surprising visual detail: the rider in the background is barely taller than the legs of the horse in the middle, an effect of perspective that makes the flat landscape feel suddenly deep.

Questions to stay withPreguntas para quedarse

  1. Does this scene feel like the arrival before a race, or like a parade meant to display the horses and riders?¿Esta escena parece la llegada previa a una carrera o un desfile para lucir caballos y jinetes?
  2. What social differences can be read in the clothing of riders, handlers and onlookers?¿Qué diferencias sociales se pueden leer en la ropa de jinetes, cuidadores y espectadores?
  3. How would the mood change if the rearing horse on the right were removed?¿Cómo cambiaría el ánimo si se quitara el caballo encabritado de la derecha?

I first notice the very fine hatching of this lithograph in sepia, black and cream. With short lines and stippling the muscles, manes and even the small stones on the path are modeled. The paper is light, with tones #f3ead6 and #d9c8a6, and the dark ink #2e2419 draws the thin border. I see even inking and the title L'ARIVÉE DE LA COURSE below, crisply printed. It is a horizontal print that needs low light to keep those delicate browns from fading.

The amateur astronomerEl astrónomo aficionado

Even with no stars, I am drawn to the even light of this almost empty sky. There are no long shadows or strong contrasts, so it feels like late morning with high, diffuse sun. That flat lighting helps each figure stand out against the background, like a clear horizon. In the distance, tiny, a rider crosses the plain, almost like a moving dot. The tall wooden post on the right reminds me of a meridian marking a position on the ground.

The eight-year-oldLa niña de ocho años

I really like the three main horses because each one is doing something different. One walks calmly with its neck stretched out, another is partly hidden behind the man in the top hat and dark coat, and the one on the right rears up on two legs like it wants to jump. The rider of that horse lifts his black hat as if saying hello. I also spotted the man carrying a light canvas and straw on his shoulder and the tiny rider in the background coming alone.

  1. #1

How many main horses are seen up close on the light dirt road?

    HintPista

Count only those in the foreground, from left to right, not including the tiny distant rider.

  2. #2

What tall wooden object marks the ground on the right, next to the rearing horse?

    HintPista

It is vertical, thin and tall, stuck into the ground.

  3. #3

What color is the hat the rider on the right lifts with one hand?

    HintPista

It is the same dark tone that dominates the print inks and matches his clothing.
