What you would seeLo que verías
A vertical black-and-white print, presented on a wide off-white sheet, traps us inside a bell tower. Occupying the upper center, a huge dark bell hangs between massive wooden posts rendered with long strokes that imitate grain, knots, and worn edges. Thick beams cross the composition diagonally in the foreground and background, forming a cage-like framework that leaves almost no breathing room. From the bell’s heavy clapper, a thin, emaciated man hangs, his torso partly bare, his clothing in tatters, his arms pinned to his body, his head tilted and his bare legs dangling limply. To the left, round tower openings let in flat white light, where one bird perches in silhouette and another flies past; in the lower right, a large bird crosses the scene as a black, almost abstract shape. A frayed rope hangs at upper left. The image is built from dense cross-hatching and deep tonal areas that suggest aquatint, making wood, metal, and flesh emerge from shadow. Along the bottom, a French caption is printed in capitals, with the artist’s credit below at right. The scale is unsettling: bell and beams dwarf the body, which is suspended dead center, like another part of the mechanism.
How to look at itCómo mirarla
First find the bell, then follow the clapper downward until it turns into an instrument of execution. Next, look to the margins and notice the birds and daylight: the outside world continues, indifferent. That contrast makes the interior feel even more airless.
ContextContexto
According to the source, this is an 1867 etching and aquatint on chine collé by Belgian artist Félicien Rops (1833–1898), held by the Cleveland Museum of Art. It belongs to the visual world of *The Legend and Adventures of Ulenspiegel and Lamme Goedzak*, the novel by Charles De Coster also published in 1867 about the Flemish folk hero Ulenspiegel. The caption at the bottom explains the scene: “And he had the man who had sounded the alarm hanged from the clapper of the bell.” Beyond that reference and the museum record, the specific circumstances of this impression are not known.

Curious detailDato curioso
If the body moved, the clapper could strike the bell: Rops turns an instrument made to call, warn, and alarm into the very device that punishes the man who gave the alarm.

The conservatorLa restauradora
As a conservator I focus on how this image was made. It is an 1867 etching and aquatint on chine collé, and you can see it in the deep blacks of the bell and in the cross-hatching that models the wood with its grain and knots. I notice the bone-colored paper around the print: it gives breathing room to a scene tightly boxed in by diagonal beams. The frayed rope at upper left and the printed signature at lower right also tell us about the craft of printmaking.

I look at this tower as if it were a dark observatory. The round openings on the left let in a flat white light, like cut-out moons, and there the bird silhouettes look like constellations in transit. The clapper from which the body hangs is the gravitational center of the composition: everything falls toward it, even the beams that frame it like a cage. It is an image about weight and suspension, where the huge bell turns a human moment into part of the mechanism.

This picture scares me a little but I cannot stop looking at it. There is a giant bell in the middle of wooden beams that look like a very tight little house for birds. From the little iron piece inside hangs a skinny man with his head bowed and bare feet. I see little black birds, one perched on the round window and another flying below. Everything is in black and white and feels very quiet, as if the bell will never ring again.
